160 or 190 gr. broadhead
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:30:00 AM »
ok, i just finished making my first set of wood arrows.   i shoot a 62" longbow  and its 56lbs@28, and i pull about 29.  i got a test kit of target points from 3rivers,   and the 160 and 190 grain shoot the best.   to get the weight that i like i would have to go with the 190 ( put complete arrow at 600gr.)   at ten yards the shoot the same, 15 yards 190 is better and 20 yards they shoot about the same.  what do yall think.  i like the 190s for the weight and the do shoot a bit better all around.  but will broadheads act the same,  and what b/hs can you get in 190gr.   any help is always welcome

thanks

Not many 190 grain glue on broadheads around, but the Grizzly El Grande is 190 grains.  I believe ACE makes a 200 grain head.  The Grizzly is right beveled and works best with right wing fletching.  I'm currently shooting a 160 grain double bevel STOS that flies real well.  That's as heavy as STOS makes, though they will be coming out with some left wing bevels up to 200 grains or more in the not too distant future.

It's difficult to say which will fly better for you.  Broadheads don't always act like comparable weight field points.  Though all of the heads I mention generally fly real well.  Best to try out a few.  Good luck.

if you can go heavier, near as I can tell you have everything to gain by doing this.  If you find a 200 gr head you like you can always do some trimming off the rear to get your weight
Silence over speed.  Heavier arrows never hurt.

Recommend that you put the aluminum screw in adaptors on your wooden arrows and use screw in field points and broadheads.  You can get the adaptors at 3 Rivers - weigh 40 gr.  I use these on my woodies with 190 gr Simmons Interceptors which I interchange with 190 gr field points for practice, squirrels and rabbits.  Makes it easy and I really like the way the arrows fly.

Most of my bows - longbows are 60 to 70 lbs. and this is the set up I prefer for hunting. Been doing it for years.  Hope this helps.

Try the 190 grain Ribtek.  Strong and easy to sharpen.

You're not done tuning yet, but if 190's are better now they most likely will be the most tune friendly when you put on broadheads and finish dialing in your bow.

The Grizzly 190 is a real favorite, and Tusker has a 190 now that's a good broadhead as well.  Ace makes a 200, close enough, and the Ribtek like Bodark suggested.  I can't think of any others off the top of my head.  The Ribbie would probably be the easiest to sharpen, although I've not tried the Ace.
