600 Carbons for hunting?
« on: August 03, 2008, 01:21:00 AM »
I want to try some 600 carbons out of my 46# at 27" fita style bow for hunting. Im looking at either gold tip entrada 600's, and the carbon express terminator jrs. I figure the finished weight should be around 350 - 360 grains. It may be on the light side for hunting, but I've read of some people having good success killing whitetails with those fast, light arrows. What are some of your setups with the .600 spine carbons, and have you had any success hunting with them? Also, any idea about what size point I might need for a starting point?

Thanks!

What's your draw weight? Most bowyers recommend at least 8 grains per pound of draw weight. In fact, many will not honor their warranty if a lighter arrow is used.

Also keep in mind that a heavier arrow will out-penetrate a lighter arrow, with all else being equal.

My 625 grain carbons out of a 50 @ 28 longbow regularly blow through the (half shot-out) excelsior bales at the local range. Never did it once with the 550 grain cedars I used to shoot - even out of my previous LB - 64 @ 28.

I am shooting the bemen 500 size shafts with 5.5 bananna fletch and 125 gr BH or field point.

I did add inside the shaft fullength 1/8 inch poly rope to increase the overall weight of the arrow. I am now in the 470 gr average weight of the arrow.I did this as I am just cheap and can not see paying another 12 bucks for a doz brass 100 gr weights to put inside the shaft.

The arrows seem to fly very well out of my checkmate firebird model bow that is 49 lb at 28 inch draw and I have the arrow cut to 29 1/2 inch long. I am drawing 28 1/2 inch actual draw.

The target point size I use for the carbons 500 arrow is 9/32 in 125 gr points .

My 42# Recurve likes the GT 3355's cut at 28.5", three 4" feathers, with 100gr brass insert and a 125gr broadhead.  They regularly pass through my old blackhole, and bury themselves in my reinhart 18.1.

I picked up some more and will be trying them cut to 30", standard insert(15-20gr) and a 50gr addon weight in front of a 3x 5" feathes with the 125 tips.

These arrows fly like lasers, quick and straight if I release it clean.

Redclay, I have killed one coyote and 2 doe's with 8gpp. I had a bad shoulder ansd hunted light that year. I was shooting a carbonwood 2000 cut to 29"s and I believe 150 grains up front. The coyote was 20 yards or so and quartering away. I hit her in the left ham and it came out her off shoulder. Both doe's were totally broadside and only 6-8 yards and both were 90-100#s. I hit one a little forward and did not get a pass thru but she only went 40 yards. The other was a perfect hit just behind the shoulder and the arrow stuck in the ground on the far side. I was shooting a 125 grain Snuffer, it centered a rib going in and sliced two going out. If ya keep yoor shots close and take only broadside or quartering away shots, you will kill most any whitetail ya want. The bow was a Widow and was 44#s at my draw. Shawn

Thanks alot. I'm not really worried about damaging the bow because the fita limbs are built to handle light target arrows. The 350 grainers were about 8 gpp out of my bow anyway if i remember right.
Im going to keep my shots under 20 yards no matter what arrows I use, and was thinking that some small, razor sharp 2 blades should be able to do the trick.

One of our customers got complete pass thru on a mature doe using a 35 lb bow and 333 gr Entrada 600.
It you hit them in the lungs, you win.
