What carbon arrows for 53# Kodiak?
« on: August 07, 2008, 12:27:00 PM »
Hi All,
I recently got a really nice '65 Kodiak from our good friend "BowDoc". It is a super nice shooter. I have shot woodies for many, many years, but recently I have been interested in exploring carbon arrows. It seems that the Carbon Express shafts get good press, but I an looking for suggestions. (mfg, size, length etc).

Bow is 60" long, 53# @ 28", my draw length is right at 28". I would like to cut the shaft to about 3/4" clearence, so 28.75" nock throat to back of point. I like 150gr grizzly 2 blade heads.

What are your recommendations? As always, all help is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Harry.

I shoot a L.B. and 2 differant R.C. 53# at my short draw of 27". I shoot Gold Tips 3555 cut at 29-1/4" with a 100gr. insert and a 125 point and 3 (4") shield cut feathers. They fly like a dart for me, out of all 3 bows. They also fly great with any 125gr. broad head I have shot. No matter what carbon you pick DO NOT CUT THEM TO SHORT.

Hi Carphunter,
What is the rational for not cutting carbon shafts to draw length+clearance room? I thought that weighted inserts, add on weights, and weighted broadhead adapters were used to fine tune the spine.
Harry.

You might be able to cut them the exact length you want them and they will shoot fine. In my case if I cut them any shorter they are too stiff. I might could cut them but I started with full length and cut them just a little at a time. When I got to the length that I shoot now, I shot my buddies same exact set up, but his was 27.5" and they would not fly. I am not saying not to cut them, I am saying cut them a little at a time. You are also right about the weight on the ends, it will make them go lighter on spine. Good Luck and there will be someone that knows alot more about carbon than I do that will be on here to give you help. This is just what I have found that works for me.

I'm shooting just about the exact set'up as you. 53# at 28". longbow.  The gold-tip 35/55's in traditional full length are 30 1/2". I leave full length add a 50 gr. brass insert and 125gr. tip. fly like darts when my crappy release is working good. I agree with carphunter on the fact that carbon can get real strong on spine if you cut to much. You might not need the brass inserts with the heavier broadheads.

I have a 55# Grizzly that pulls about 50# at just a hair under 27".  I am using Beman 500's.  I cut them at 27 3/4", and I originally started out with 260 total up front.  I have had to go down to 210 up front (including insert) because the shafts were flying too weak at 260.

The Carbon Express is a great arrow and I would bet a Diet Pepsi that the CE 150 size would work just fine.

Carphunter,Trad-Beagle,kahunter and Blackhawk
Thanks for the responses. I will take all advice into consideration. So, BH, the Carbonexpress in 150's is the ticket? I might try to pick up one or two to fletch w/3, 5" feathers and give them a go!
I will report my findings!
Thanks to all again,
Harry.
