Black Widow needs an arrow
« on: August 07, 2008, 11:48:00 PM »
A bit of trad wisdom from my stick & string partners, please. I just bought another Widow to add to the arsenal. My SAII shoots darts at 51lbs.
I bought a MAII to get a little more "umph" and I am taking my newest Widow to Montana for antelope next week. It is 54lbs @ 28" and I draw 28 1/2.
I have 4 choices of arrows...(1) 30" CX Heritage 150's   (2) 30" CX Heritage 250's  (3) 29 3/4" Beman Black Max 400's  (4) 29 1/2" GT XT 55/75's
If you were me, which would serve you better from the MAII and how much weight up front?? (I will be using old Bear razorheads...broadheads + adaptors = 152 grains)
I am  interested in all opinions...as a high school teacher, I am most certainly not opposed to learning!!
ALSO...I fletched the arrows with 2 left wing wild turkey primaries and a cock feather from the primaries from a Canadian goose. The goose feather seems a bit softer than the turkey feathers. If this is really so, could this hamper accurate flight. Thank you for your help and interest. Cotton

I have the same bow in an MAIII.  My thoughts are:  I'm not sure I would switch to a bow that is only 3 lbs. heavier when you are shooting the other well.
If you have to shoot the MA then find the arrow that shoots best and is as heavy as possible before it hinders your shooting at, say, 30 yds., or that farthest range at which you are consistent.  Hopefully, that loaded arrow will also help quiet the bow when shot.
I shoot Beman BM 300's with 260 grn Grizzlies for a total weight of 660ish.
Can't comment about the goose feathers.

Good luck.....

I just finished bare shaft tuning my PSAII (54# @ 28") with the Beman MXF Classic 400's. They wound up being 30" nock groove to front of the arrow with an Easton BAR ring and a 150 grain Wensel Woodsman, an 11" wrap and three 5" shield cut feathers.

I draw this bow to about 29" when my form is good, and it shoots great. Arrows are lazer beams and hit hard. I haven't gotten around to weighing them, but I'm sure they are heavy enough to get the job done.

I used the standard aluminum HIT inserts b/c that's what worked well. I bought a dozen of the 3-Rivers 100 brain brass HIT inserts and never used them. I'd have to go up to 340 spine to use those inserts outta this bow.

The goose feathers are a little thinner and lighter than turkey feathers.  May or may not be as stiff.  Only way to know whether the differences are enough is to shoot them.  If it were me, I wouldn't have mixed the feather types.
