Carbon shafts for 53# recurve
« on: August 19, 2008, 03:35:00 PM »
I love shooting POC arrows, but I have a hard time getting them consistent.  Life right now doesn't allow much time for building/tweaking arrows, so I'm thinking of trying some carbon shafts.

I'd like to buy arrows already built, but don't know where to start on shafts.  53# recurve bingham-patter 1pc recurve, 28" draw.  Shoot split finger off shelf, typically hunt with 125gr Zwickey Eskimo's.

I don't know of a trad shop within driving distance - get a test arrow kit first? My bow is not too picky, it shoots 2117's and 2018's ok as well as the 60-65 POC's.

Axis 400 or Beman Classic 500. They fly great out of anything I've shot them thru,,,,,from 42lbs. to 64lbs. I'd say anything over 11 gpi. would have the correct spine for you.

I have a 55lb Palmer Recurve and cut my arrows to 28". I shoot Gold Tips 35/55, Heritage 150's and Beman Classics 500 with 125 grain tips. I also shoot Heritage 250's with a 200 grain point and I am hoping I can get the Beman classic 400's to fly with 200 grains up front for hunting.

Right on Paul.  The CE Heritage 150, 250, and 350 shafts are all bangers.  I shoot the 250 out of my 55# Fox High Sierra and the 350 out of my 65# Fox High Sierra.  They fly like a champ and are tough as nails.

I've been kind of leaning toward the CE shafts.  SOunds like 250's with 100 grain adapter and 125 grain points cut to 29.5 would be pretty close.

I'm shooting Gold Tip 5575's cut to 29" with 205 gr up front.  I shoot a Morrison Shawnee 56@28.  They paper tune like bullet holes.  You could likely shoot the same setup with adding a few more grains up front.  I too love wood arrows (douglas fir esp), but don't have as much time to build them as I used to. Those carbons are pretty tough, just make sure to shoot them all from the same angle.    :p

Mike go with the 150 and cut to 29.5"s and use a 50 grain brass insert for a total of 175 up front. The 250s will weigh near 570 grains and may still be a tad stiff with 225 up front. If you bow is not cut well past center ya may need a tad more weight even on the 150s. Shawn

Mike, everyone has some good info, but let me tell you my experience with them.

I use the 250's cut 29 1/4" long with 200 up front with my Wes Wallace 50#'r, and they fly super.
I also use the 150's cut 29 3/4 long with 175 up front for my Lonewolf 45#'r, also with amazing results. I have tried and tried to get my 150's to work with my Wes, but to no avail, i have every available point wieght and weight inserts, but still..no good. I dont know if this is because the Wes is just a hard shooter or if it's the fact that the 150's are rated for 50# or less. anyway thats just MHO. But like fatman said, you could always get a test kit. Keep us posted.

I'm shooting a Widow PSA 52lbs, this bow is cut 3/16 past center. The 150's were to weak for me, the 250's cut to 30" with 100gr inserts and 125gr head fly great.

I shoot Beman 500 MFX classics from a 54# @ 28" recurve cut to center. I draw 28" and have the arrows cut 29.5 BOP. I shoot 140 field points and 150 WW's from it with standard inserts and they bare shaft near perfect. They hit 3" to the left of my fletched arrows. I have 100 grain inserts for them but haven't tried them bare yet. They fly fine fletched though.

Best carbon shaft I've tried so far. Foot them with an inch of aluminum shaft and they are battle  ship tuff.
