I'm nearly there. Still walking, but it may just be a matter of time or another injury. I use two walking sticks in the woods. In bow season, one of them is my longbow!
I had polio at the age of 4, and have coped with the physical damage well until recent years. I'll be 60 on my next birthday. My nervous system, heavily damaged by the original disease, is wearing out from overuse of the remaining nerve cells, which have branched and done multiple duty all these years. My physical condition is deteriorating at an accelerated rate because of it. It's called "post-polio syndrome". Most polio survivors who reach their 50's experience it.
"I had one nerve left, and you just got on it" has special meaning for me!
I've been planning for this. I now have a 4-wheeler for getting around on my place, which I resisted for years. I've broken a leg a couple of times, and I know now that if it happens again, I may be on wheels for everything.
Thanks for bringing this up, hotfoot. Good to know that the organization is there if (when) I need it.
