Killed a hog today.
« on: August 24, 2008, 08:16:00 PM »
My buddy Brad and I went hoggin today.  Didn't find hogzilla, but did happen up on this one.  Actually, she happened up on us.  I think I did her a favor though.  I noticed she was limping before I killed her.  After inspecting her, I decided to let the other critters have this one.  Some predator, probably a pack of dogs, had their way with this sow.  I doubt she could have gotten loose from coyotes.  She should have weighed 75 pounds, but I doubt she was 40.  She had a chewed up leg, with the elbow joint exposed through the skin.  The back of her neck had been chewed on quite a bit.  Probably around 20 deep puncture wounds.  All the open wounds had maggots in them.  I made a "texas heart shot" on this one and she only made it 10 feet.  I suspect I got the heart at the end of 20-22" of penetration.  This is the first kill with a home made bow for me, and the same bow that popped the riser last week.  She will survive the repair!

I also found an island in the swamp that we jumped 5 deer on.  They were feeding under a bunch of wild grapes.  Twenty yards away are three persimmon trees.  A couple of the un-ripe fruit were on the ground due to the storm winds we had the  last few days.  I am stoked about this spot for deer season.

Congrats bro. And nasty. You did the right thing. She's better off now.

You know what they say about those muscadine? Get a pig gorging on those for a week and it smells like they are marinated in wine when you cook them. Well that's what they say around here anyway. They also say snakes bite their tail and roll like a hoop if they're scared. So who knows what these country people really know.

So the mend is holding up pretty well so far? (knock on wood)

The handle was cracked the full length of where the shedua meets the hickory accent stripe by about 1/16".  I was able to completely fill the crack with super glue gel.  When unstrung the crack closed up, and I added three clamps.  I then wrapped the grip with two layers of braided nylon cord soaked in super glue.  Doesn't look as classy as leather, but works really well.  It was raining really hard, and I got really wet, but my hand would not slip on that grip.

Good job on the pig and the bow.

I have only one problem with hunting with my boo backed bows.  I haven't found any wood arrows consistent enough for me.  I hate to hunt with carbon out of these all natural bows, but just may.
