older MH takedown getting creaky-Help!
« on: August 25, 2008, 07:02:00 AM »
I have an older model MH takedown with the big 1/2" ball-bearing alignment and lately it's been making a creaking noise when I first begin the draw.  It doesn't do it once I draw it a few times but if it sits "still" for a while it will do it again.  I've changed the string and taken it down to check all parts including limbs and alignment ball-bearings and limb bolts and washers. I've even put some light lubication on the balls  :banghead:   but it still does it. I don't want to blow that good shot opening day because of a creaky bow.  Any ideas?

Whump sez; Hey Mike---had a bow doing exactly the same thing you are talking about one time. It seemed the more I tried to stop it with any type of wet lubrication the worse it got. I took it apart and cleaned all the contact points with acetone and used dry graphite on them----just use your fingers or a Q tip and rub the graphite on the parts.  It stopped my bow from creaking---even though it was subtle, a deer can hear a mouse pee on cotton at 100yds so you don't need extra noise when drawing.I hope this helps.   Hunt safe

Mike,

What Whump says.  Or, I have seen friends with that problem clean the wet lube off and use bowstring wax on the bearing to correct the problem.

I don't have a bow with that system, so I've never tried it myself.  Just observed.

No offense, but I wouldn't use acetone.  Acetone can and will dissolve many finishes.
