« on: August 30, 2008, 08:46:00 PM »
Going out on my first hunt this fall and know nothing. What are the best lures and scent blocks. Thanks for all the help, advice and encouragement I recieved from the "gang"!  :notworthy:  \\

The best thing for me anyway, is to try and stay scent free as much as possible.

I do like the scent killer sprays.

I think the first step would be to make sure there legal to use during the hunt in your state. In VA its illegal to hunt over any type of bait.

Brian,
you will get a million different answers as to which lure works, i have tried many and do not use any now. at times they worked well and other times it scared them right away. i had used Tinks 69 a lot. as for scent eliminators i use Scent Killer sold at Wallmart. i also wear rubber boots when possible. most will tell you to play the wind but i do not have enough tree stands for that, i plan to hunt a certain stand the night before and thats the one i use.

Keep the wind in your face and save your money on the scent blockers and lures. I've found that most of the time any strange scent will put a deer on alert looking for something.

Last I heard, there was a lawsuit against some scent blockers, because they don't work.  I don't know if that goes for everything, but I'm with the 'play the wind' crowd.

I got to go with all the above. As a small archery shop owner, I get my lure from a deer farm. It is 100% fresh, sent to me overnight and then I repackage etc. Now the deer farm owner, told me that deer lure works on some days and on others it sure does not seem to work. During the doe cycle  ( breeding) it seems there is just a few days that her scent will be at just the right scent that a buck with trail her, to be there when shwe is ready to breed. I have only had that occur over lure 3 times in about 50 years of hunting. Do I still put out lure, sometimes, like in the peak rut time for NY ( first week of Nov ), put I do think the best is keep your camo clean, I keep my camo in a big plastic tote with fresh pine, I change or wash it about every 3 days with scent free soap, and number 1 for us hunters is make sure you keep the wind in your face. I even have a very small feather attached to the bow string, to tell me when wind is changing... Hope this helps and good luck in your first huntin season..

Over the years I think I have tried everything at least a few times.A few have seemed to work on a paticlar deer on a certain day. Most times they did not work at all and a few times they resulted inspooking a deer I might have killed if not useing them.I am now in the no scent is the best crowd.Hunting the wind in the likely places on the best days gives me the most consistant results. jmo

Just try to keep your gear as scent-free as possible.  Most hunters take care of thier clothes and boots but I have seen them mess up with Back / Fanny packs. Throwing them around in the back of a truck, ATV, etc and they absorb exhaust, fuel, and other odors.

Use the wind (most importatnt IMO) and don't depend on that cover scent to work in your area.  Good luck!

As far as lures they do spook game at times.  I like to let them move naturally.  I would rather hunt w/ a sharpend stick and a scent blocker suit than my curve and count on the wind to blow the same direction at the moment of truth.  They work awsome on whitetails.

I EXPERIMENTED WITH SCENTS AND BLOCKERS FOR ABOUT 18 YEARS,LETS SAY I WENT BACK TO WHAT MY FATHER AND UNCLE TAUGHT ME WHEN I FIRST STARTED HUNTING! ALWAYS PLAY THE WIND FIRST,KEEP HUNTING CLOTHES AND SELF CLEAN(I DO USE SCENT KILLER LAUNDRY SOAP FOR MY CLOTHES,AND UNSCENTED SOAP FOR HAIR AND BODY)COVER SCENT WE MAKE OUR OWN FROM AN OLD FAMILY RECIPE USING VEG FROM THE AREAS WE HUNT, AS FOR ATTRACTANTS IF WE GET DOE,WE KEEP THE BLADDER IF ITS FULL AND BOTTLE IT, SAME IF WE GET BUCKS, FREEZE IT IF YOU DON'T USE IT, FOR THE NEXT YEAR!! I WASTED BIG MONEY IN YEARS PAST USING STORE BOUGHT STUFF,I'M NOT SAYING THEY DON'T WORK,JUST DIDN'T WORK FOR ME!!JUST MY OPINION!

This may sound odd but I swear its true. Deer are also very attracted to urine from  pregnat woman. I discovered this once when camping. My wife went to the bathroom (#1) by a small bush just before dark. When I awoke from our tent in the early morning there were seven deer frantically pawing and sniffing at that very spot. WARNING! Trying to collect this stuff could be detrimential  to one's well being!

I like to use scent killer spray, also if I come in for lunch I hang all my clothes outside to keep them aired out. Personally I use Buck urine in the early season and a doe in heat during the rut, it does not work every time but I can tell you I have seen some amazing results from the use of it over the years. With what I have witnessed first hand I will not go in the woods without some kind of attractant, I do like to switch off with different brands just to mix it up a little.
