Tab, Glove, then Bare Fingers. Now what?
« on: September 06, 2008, 05:36:00 PM »
Well, my tab fell apart at the range yesterday so  I started shooting bare fingered. Realized the noise I thought was my bow was really the tab slapping my fingers. Picked up a Alaskan Bowhunting Superglove today and shot it, much quieter than the tab, but not as quiet as bare fingers. Not sure what to try next. I like the way a tab feels, I can feel the string and feel my middle finder hitting my anchor point. Glove is mucxh quieter, but I don't care for it, too bulky, cannot feel the string or my anchor point. And I've grown a bit fond of the skin on my fingers to bare finger shooting is out the door.
Any suggestions on what to try next that will give me the feel of a tab, but also quiet?  I'm thinking of ways to quiet down my existing tab, but am wondering if the are other mass produced items that would fill my need?

The soft leather in a deerskin Berlin or Damascus glove might work for you, particularly if you're not drawing a real heavy bow.

Buy an Angel tab, they are kind of short and very quiet, not a lot of leather to slap around after the shot or trim yours back. Shawn

I think the Cavalier Elite is very quiet, particularly if you trim it to fit.

I agree 100% with Shawn (sorry my brother from a different mother;^)) If you like a tab, there's none better, in my opinion, than the angel. That being said, the quietest and fastest way for me now hunting is bare fingers. If the string hurts your fingers, double serve the serving under your finger contact area and you're ready to go. No more lost, wet and dog chewed tabs and gloves, LOL! You can use your tab if you're shooting dozens of arrows at a time but in a very short time, you'll build-up the fingers.

I did like the feel of bare fingers, just raised heck with the ring finger. Can't see doing a 3D shoot or extended range shooting that way though.

I cut the tips off the index and middle fingers of a Damascus glove.  I also trim off the second layer of leather from the middle finger.  I have to put a little fletching glue on the seams at the bare ends of the cut fingers and let them set with a clothes pin providing pressure.  I anchor at the side of my nose and really like to feel my fingertips on my face.  It will shorten the life of the glove but there are trade-off's to everything.

Bob,
Excellent idea to double the serving, gotta get me a serving tool and try it.
I've been shooting bare finger after having no joy finding a thin glove to fit properly, tried tab but not for me. Although the bow is not too heavy, 55#, I can only shoot around 2 or 3 dozen arrows at a time.
Do you use normal serving material to build it up?

If you really like the bare fingers you might try what I do with my fishing bow. I just slide some peep sight tubing (from a wheelie bow) down over my serving and use it like one of the old no-glove gadgits. It keeps me from ruining a good glove in the water and protects my fingers more than just shooting bare finger. Works for me anyway.

Roderick,
I tie in my string nocks (I use one above and one below the arrow nock) and then use regular serving. Serve from the nocks outward to the ends. Works real well. Then start out shooting just a few arrows a day with bare fingers and slowly increase the number. It may not work for everyone but it does for me. No problems shooting my 70# 'Tip all day now.

Just remember that there can be too much of a good thing- adding weight to your string takes energy from your arrow.

Shooting 60# I use a Damascus glove on targets, and switch to a light wool glove when hunting. It's just enough protection, and I can feel the string and arrow nock through it almost like bare skin.

I switched to a different tab today and it seems to make a little less noise if I get a clean release. Tried bare fingers again today and that ring finger was pretty sensitive.
I'm thinking of heading out this week and picking up some leather and rigging up my own idea for a tab and see how it works. Lots to do to get ready for this weekends hunting opener so there may not be enough time to work on this? Could make for a good winter project though.

Roger Rothhar triple serves his string above and below a double nock set.  Maybe you'd like it.

Don,
I thought about that before I added the double serving. Shooting a 575gr arrow, my bow averaged 189 fps with one serving and 189 fps with the second serving added. No change in speed but I was using a tab with the single serving and bare fingers with the double serving.

I've used tabs for quite awhile, especially in the early years of my hunting.  I don't know what can make noise.  I have some old Neet calf-hair models (synthetic) and also a couple Black Widow tabs.  No noise.

Oh yes....you guys can shoot bare fingers all you want....not this old boy.      "[dntthnk]"

Must not be enough weight there to matter. Does an extra layer of serving really make that much difference on your fingers? I shoot bare occasionally just to get the feel, in case I get separated from my glove while hunting. I can only make a few shots, though.
