Need Help - Reducing Weight
« on: September 11, 2008, 07:04:00 PM »
After finding out that I shoot trad, a co-worker asked if I would be interested in a Bamboo Longhunter (Quillian).  The bow is 68# at 28" and my draw length is 32".  Surprisingly, the draw was confortable out to about 3" shy of my draw length.  Can weight be reduced on this bow?

That weight bow is probably stacking at 3-5# per inch for the last three inches, add another 3# from 28 to 29 inches, and it's probably drawing close to 85#@32 inches.  Some weight can be taken off, 5# fairly easily.  Pretty hard to get 10#.  How much weight do you want to shoot?  Might be better off trading for a lighter bow.

Thanks guys.  While I can draw it now, it is too much weight -- don't want to try to be macho and blow out a shoulder.  I am much more comfortable in the 60-65lb. range, so I will probably suggest he try to sell the bow on this site or the LW.

A few years ago I posted this same question and jim in oregon gave these directions. Put masking tape on the last half of the bow limb and from 10 inches back from the nock draw a line from the outside of the limb to 1/16 in at the limb tip on each side of the limb.  Remove material from the edge with a belt sander or a file could be used. This method is easy to follow without messing-up the tiller. By keeping your new edge parallel with your mark you can check progression of weight reduction as you go.  As beefed up as these bow limbs are causing whipped ends on the limbs should not be a problem and should make for a smoother draw and less stack at your draw length. If this is not enough reduction go back to 11 or 12 inches and repeat, just go slow and remove small amounts. I reduced my longhunter from 68# to 54#.
