Groung hunting/blind/leaf suit
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:33:00 PM »
I will be trying to hunt whitetail deer this season.I would like to do it from the ground.Do you recommend a ground blind or a leaf suit? What has the success rate been for you?I have seen some blinds for $100.00 but they seem a little short more for sitting down.Any tips or opinions welcome.

Sit still against a tree with the wind in our face. Cut a few leafy branches and stick in the ground around you. That will be fast, quiet and easy.

About a week ago I went out about 2 hrs before dark and did a little slipping around in my leafy suit.  I sneaked with 20yds of about 5 deer.  One small buck finally saw me, and we stared each other down for the next 15 minutes or so.  He never did figure out what I was and finally just slipped away.  I say that to say that a leafy suit (or probably any good camo) combined with a good background and maybe some additional cover is plenty.  Try to position yourself in the shade against a tree, and put some small branches in front of you.  Don't obstruct your shooting lanes though.

I wear simple earth tone plaid and a stick bunch of branches in my pockets, hat and bow quiver. It seems to work fine. I shot my first deer this way and have even had close range turkey fun.

The ASAT 3D suit works great.  Building a little natural blind is a good idea, too.

If you can brush in a ground blind and leave it for a bit then that'll work, too.

I tend not to use ground blinds or tree stands as much as others.  I like not having to lug stuff.  I am lazy.

You don't need that stuff.

good photo Jerry.

I like lots of us hunters do make up ground blinds with camo material and they do work.

But nothing is better than natural blind.

I do like the tip of just put your face into the wind and cut a few branches and this is so simple it does work.

IMO natural ground blinds are the best. Easy to put in and maintain. Plus you leave nothing in the woods to tempt those with low moral standards.

Also if you can get your hands on some military surplus camo netting it comes in handy if you feel you need more concealment in the natural blind.

Best of luck.

I like natural ground blinds myself. Always have used them with great success. Still have to watch the wind, so it pays to have a few set up locations depending on that. I also have a piece of 5' x 12' burlap camo from Bass Pro Shops, works just as well, as anything else.
Someday you and I will take the Great Hart by our own skill alone, and with an arrow. And then the Little Gods of the Woods will chuckle and rub their hands and say, "Look, Brothers. An Archer! The Old Times are not altogether gone!"
