What mild r/d longbow length?
« on: September 20, 2008, 05:25:00 PM »
Good Afternoon,
I have been strongly looking a going with a D shaped mild r/d longbow for my first trad bow.  My concern is length.  I want to eventually hunt some from a tree stand but will also hunt from the ground.  I realize I will sacrifice stability with a shorter bow say 60" but I am only 5'8" tall.  Would a 62" or 64" be too long for me?  Decisions. Decisions.

You will get use to any length bow you choose. I would suggest you go longer than the 60inch in that type of bow. Stick to the 62 or 64inch and you will be happier.I draw 27inches and in a mild rd bow I wont go any less that 62inches. The length has never been a problem in the woods.

I have a 60 " mild r/d bow and drag it back to 31" with no problems . What is your draw length? All bows are different so what works with one may not the other. The best advice is to shoot some then decide :0) Drew

Welcome to the Gang!  Like SL, I would recommend a 62-64" length in a mild deflex reflex bow.  With most designs, this will give you a smooth drawing and stable bow.  With my 26" draw, I have come to like 62" and have a Robertson, GN Critter Gitter and Okaw Osage Royale of this style and length.  They hunt in the woods just fine.

"D shaped mild r/d longbow", get at least 62". It sounds like you like the traditional longbow look as I do!

Thank you for the response.  I got interested in trad archery a few months ago and this forum is a major source of information for me.  I have been thinking of getting a Mohawk.  I read a lot of good things about them.  Oh yeah, I am also a lefty.

I would say ou will be fine with a 60"er and ya could not go wrong with a 62"er. 4"s does not make much difference in a treestand. I shoot a 54" recurve and that does make a bit of a difference but I have never had a 62" bow cost me a shot. Shawn

Pick out a bow you like.  Then trust the bowyer to recommend the length bow that will fit your draw length.
