Splicing Billets....Which Glue??

Just a few quick questions.  I am planning to splice some osage billets, and have heard that I should use either Resorcinol or Urac 185.  What do you guys use?  Is one better than the other?  Does the glue joint need to be heat cured for the glue to have maximum strength? and lastly, I cut the wood about 4 months ago, how long should I let it cure before I cut the splice and glue them up?  Any input is much appreciated!!  Thanks.

I use urac because it has been a great glue for me in the past. When I am going to splice billets I cut the splice while the wood is drying because the thin wood in the splice prongs will dry much quicker than a solid chunk of wood.

I have used Urac but also Tite-Bond glues with good results. Never had one come apart. If you are concerned about the strength of your splice you can always put a dowel through the splice for security. I have never done this because I didn't think it was necessary.   Pat

Not wanting to hijack a thread here, but do the billets you are splicing need to be fully seasoned when they are glued or can you glue them up and let them finish seasoning out?  Thought about trying my hand a splicing some pecan this weekend and the split out staves have be drying almost a year and a half.  Thanks and again, don't want to take away from the original question.

Aaron, just take your spliced ends and set in front a a heater for a few to remove any excess mositure. Ones I've done like this have shrunk somewhat and I've had to trim the leading edges of the splices to get 'em to fit better. Didn't do this on some and they crooked later on in their handles as they seasoned out. At a year and a half seasoned it sounds like your good to go though.-ART B
