Bowhunter w/prosthetics knowledge or exp.
«

I will be meeting a new friend- a young man that was born without one hand. He has played sports and now his dad told me the young man wants to bowhunt.
I have found him a crossbow to use for this year. However neither he, his father nor myself are going to settle for a crossbow. Next year we want him in his very own bow.
Anybody who can steer me in the right direction as to where we can get a prosthetic hand or something else that can hold a bow for this young lad, I would greatly appreciate your correspondence!!
Thank You!

Check on the Colorado forum. I can't remember his name, but there was an accomplished bowhunter here who had a prosthesis on his bow hand, and had a bow made to match. I think his name was Rodicy or something similar.
Good luck!

I know of a guy in Arkansas that is an avid bowfisherman with only one hand. He serves some webbing material (1" nylon) and draws with his teeth. I consider myself a decent shot when it comes to fish and he was matching me and more often than not, beating me in a night's worth of fishing. He told me he aims down the arrow and takes a few deer with a bow every year.
Good luck with your new buddy and remember that it can be done.

Have you noticed that the times you don't get nothing while hunting, are usually the most fun you've ever had.

There was an article in TBM several years ago about this. the person had a prosthesis made for the bow hand and was a very good shot with his bow. I will dig through my old issues and see if I can find the article.

I have hunted with a man from Kentucky that used the strap in his teeth - one arm atrophied from a wreck - and he was a fine shot. He also had the oldest continuous outdoor radio show, avid hunter fisherman. He shot booth wheels and a recurve. The jaw and teeth make a heck of a solid anchor and I joked with him that all he had to do to shoot was smile.
If your friend has a solid and strong arm but just no gripper, I am sure he will find a way. Good Hunting!

There was a young lady, from Arkansas, several years ago who lost her left arm just below the shoulder. She had a prosthetic arm that Ben Pearson Bows mounted (bolted) a bow to the hand. I shot a round with her at the 4th Ben Pearson Memorial Broadhead Shoot in Pine Bluff, Ark. I believe she was at one time the Arkansas Women's Champion. I can't remember her name...maybe someone here does.

Contact the Pope & Young Club, they will have some info for you I believe. There is an archer in south eastern British Columbia who is a very accomplished target archer and bowhunter who uses a release attached to a harness on his shoulder. I will see if I can find some more info on him for you.
