Extra Long Arrow Shafting??

Hi All,

Where can I get some extra long (say 36 inch)aluminum arrow shafting?  The spine wouldn't be much of a consideration.

Any wisdom out there??

You could make a coupler, and join two shafts together. Something like the joint on a two piece pool cue, or walking stick.

I have read of guys who have experimented with "take down" arrows that have made up such things.

You could screw two shafts together, end to end, by using an 8-32 threaded rod to join two point adapters together, though you would want to epoxy the point adapters into the shafts, and square the ends of the adapters with something like the arrow squaring device, to make certain the shafts stayed in line with each other.

Otherwise, you could have someone with a lathe turn you some inserts that fit the inside of your chosen shafting with a snug push fit, to join the shafts.

Should also work for using aluminum shafting for atlatl darts.

Are you going to use them for arrows or some other purpose? If its for some other purpose, go to McMaster/Carr they have aluminum tubing in various grades and lengths.

You can buy hardwood dowels from most hardware stores in 48" lengths.  Kinda pricey and spines all over the place.

Hey Guys,

The intent is to screw them end to end ala takedown arrows to make atlatl darts for some of the Scouts I work with.  As RW says, glue in arrow head inserts and screw them together. I've seen the hardware to do the takedown arrows in the past, and am looking for some at this time. It seems the least complicated of all the suggestions I've gotten, and simple is really important when you're working with the boys.  I may end up using three pieces of shafting... who knows....the boy's will have fun!!

A simple aluminum rod, say 3/8" turned to fit inside your chosen shafts, and epoxies in, should do the trick, for simple.

If you make the insert about 1.5-2" long it should be plenty stout.
