who will win this bet??
« on: October 06, 2008, 05:27:00 AM »
was just talking with a mate who just bought a compound. hoyt 70#. he is shooting arrows that weigh 450gr. (125gr b/heads). i just bet him a carton of beer that my 69# recurve shooting 780gr arrows at 24% foc would out-pentrate his setup. he'd be devastated if it did. i can see the look on his face now. LOL. so who will win the bet??

I guess the heavier arrow would win, you, but with a case of beer on the line there is only one way to find out.  Go shoot something and let him take the first shot so there are no excuses.

Bring down a scrubber or a good boar, and shoot into it side-by-side a few times. My money's on you, Clint!

He will win because his bow will produce a lot more kinetic energy than your bow and he will probably be shooting a skinny carbon shaft.

I made a comparison of my 65# selfbow and my wife's 42# compound once. I was getting 32ft lbs of kenetic energy, she was getting 45ft lbs out of hers.

The dang wheelie things are ugly but pretty efficient.

You may have a chance.  I would find a scrub broadhead and file it down to a narrow 1/2-3/4".  Then you would stand a better chance.

There are a lot more variables that come into play here.  Not just arrow wt.  Like suggested above, shoot a narrow, sharp, 2 blade, cut on contact broadhead; the smallest diameter shaft possible.

I'd be inclined to think distance would play a factor as well...  Not a mathmagician or such, but I'd think at further distances your heavier shaft would carry more punch.  Let him build up his confidence on the 10-20 yard shots, do a double or nothing at 25-30 yards.  If he wins, buy him some cheap swill, as punishment for shooting something so ugly.   :D

I agree with Tim. I notice more punch to my heavy arrows at longer distances.

Grease your arrows and pull it back as far as possible.  May as well up your odds.

Compare equal external-profile arrow setup's. Use equal shaft diameters and equal broadheads and tune both setups for perfect arrow flight from the bow. Take a number of heavy bone-impact shots, all from equal shooting distance and angle of impact, and see what the average distance penetrated by each setup is ... then enjoy YOUR beer.

On the other hand, you could likely just take a random group on shots with each setup, into any moderately large big game animal and still win ... assuming your arrow doesn't have some penetration-inhibiting broadhead feature, like poor MA broadhead or a high-resistance drag feature.

If your 780g arrow is carbon I think your mate will be crying in his beer, if its wood it could be close.

If you are shooting carbon or aluminum, use Rain-X on the arrow and the broadhead.

my arrows are 5/16" carbons. his are carbons. i'll be shooting a blackstump b/head. he says he's going to try some three blade thing called a sonic. guess that complements the speed he has got. shooting medium will most likely be a phone book. yeah i'll start at 20m. it shall be interesting. bet his bow is loud!
