Had an encounter with a monster!
« on: October 09, 2008, 10:55:00 PM »
I posted another thread awhile ago about how I have not been seeing any deer.  Well tonight I finally saw one....and what a deer.  It was a basic 5x5 that I saw twice during the month of July.  He will gross mid 150's to low 160's.  He moved towards me quartering into the wind about 30 yards to my left.  I figured he was just going to keep going when all of a sudden he turned and headed directly to my tree.  I drew as he got closer but he never offered me anything other that a quartering to shot.  Eventually he stopped directly under my tree and stood there for a LONG time.  I was looking at him through the platform on my treestand.  I figured one of two things was going to happen. He was either going to offer me a quartering away shot, or he would eventually smell me.  Well, you guessed it.  He smelled me and looked straight up at me.  He turned inside out, ran about 40 yards, then calmly walked off!  I hate it when you do everthing right but a good one gets away due to pure dumb luck!  It's gonna be an all out assault on this one.  I know where he is!

That got my heart pumping just thinking about it. I leaving for Minn/Wis next Friday. I shot a 142 in 5x5 last year with my compound. This year  I'm using my first longbow. I'm a little nervous about letting an arrow fly without having a sight. Been practicing alot and feel confident I'll take a good broadside or quartering away shot at 20yrds or less. Go get that deer!!!!

Jon,

First: congrats on not taking a bad shot.

Second: knowing you, that deer will be dead soon anyway. Be sure to post a pic when he's got your tag on his rack.   ;)

Good luck and go get after him. This is why we call it bowhunting and not bow killing...LOL  Getting that close is awesome.

Let us know what happens.

I also want to give you a thumbs up    for not attempting a bad shot. Your good judgment of not letting your ego take over your common sense made everyone carrying a bow look good. Thanks!

I think it’s a good sign that he only ran 40 yards and then walked out of sight. Did he stop to look back in your direction after he stopped running?

150 isn't that kinda small for you Jon! Thats a dang good deer but it's hard to top that one in your avatar no matter what size. Those double droptines are just amazing. Good luck on getting the big boy.

Way to let 'em go so they can grow, Jon.  Look at all the taxidermy money you saved.  He's bound to make a mistake when the does get the rut started.

Glad to hear things are looking up out there Jon. Ditto on the thumbs up for not forcing a shot just because he was big and close. It takes a lot of composure to keep from doing dumb stuff in the presence of beautiful women and truly big deer!!!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Good restraint.   I shot a doe a couple years ago straight down.  Only got one lung, and the blood trail went for ever.  I did get her, but i'll never take that shot again.

Thanks alot guys.  Jason, it's good to hear from you man.  How's life?  Anyway I will be concentrating nearly all my efforts in this area untill they take the corn out.  This deer is living in an area that the animals completely vacate once the corn is gone due to lack of cover and/or foodsource.  It's a race against time!
