Knife in Rough Shape
« on: March 01, 2007, 01:30:00 PM »
Hey guys. I have a knife I bought a while back at a gun show. It has a deer antler handle and the blade is around 4 inches long. It's my skinning knife. In the process of trying to sharpen it with a lansky sharpener I scuffed and scratched it up pretty bad. I was going to see if any of you knifemakers knew a good way to get these out and make it look decent again. I would take a pic but I really don't think it would show up good. But it could definately use a refinishing/polishing or whatever.

Just use progessively finer grits of sandpaper to remove the scratches. I don't like a mirror polish on my knives so I go down to about 600 grit and that's it. It's easy enough to buy some polishing compound after that and use a cloth buffing wheel to get a shinier finish.

I'm like mbbushman and don't like a mirror finish... they scratch too easily.  Being careful with 600 grit can get you a nice even satin finish (sand in only one direction with a little oil to keep the paper from clogging).
If the knife isn't too bad a buffing wheel should take the little scratches out.
