« on: October 17, 2008, 11:41:00 PM »
ok, so for my senior english class I need to write an essay on my hobby, of course its tradbowhunting, I need some quotes that encompass what trad archery is all about, I am trying to say in my paper about how its not all about the kill but the experiance of just being out in the woods with bow in hand, anyone get what I'm trying to say?, if so, what are some quotes by bowhunters that share the same idea?, if you know any quotes about bowhunting in general please feel free to add them

thanks

"When a hunter is in a tree stand with high moral values and with the proper hunting ethics and richer for the experience, that hunter is 20 feet closer to God."

Fred Bear really did show me how; but it was my father that instilled in me my love of archery and hunting with bow and arrow.

Go a field with a good attitude, respect for the wildlife you hunt and for the forest and fields in which you walk. Immerse yourself in the outdoor experience. It will cleanse your soul and make you a better person.

Ian you might try doing a search on this topic. I know there have been a couple of good threads about this in the last several months.

White - the snow is crystal the fire is cold,
stand and watch the sun turn to gold.
In the morning the woods are healing,warms the frost deep in my bones. I watch a hawk in flight,my bow in hand. Now a deer approaches the edge of the forest,
my arrow flies - blood on the snow...

I run across great quotes all the time on this site. Some by famous people, but most of them come from our buddies here. I snag them out of the ethers and stash them in a "Doodles" file in my Drafts folder.I found this one:

"To me that is kind of how I feel. I do it in a way that I feel others may have done it before me. I'm not sure how right I am, but I think of the many people that went before me and hope that through me some of them still go on. I's not just the bow or the arrow, but the walk with nature and through the past toward the present on into the future I hope.

This may seem strange to some, but I think of it often and hope I can instill it into my children and grandchildren."

~T-Mac
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a nutshell, right there, is the respect that we have for the past, for our forebears, and for the effort that it takes to hunt in this fashion. We are caretakers not just of our equipment, our families, our skills. We are caretaking tradition, the old ways of woodsmanship and stealth, of up close and personal responsibility for the taking of a life that will sustain much more than our bodies. We are dancing to an ancient rhythm.
Killdeer  :campfire:
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.
Traditional bowhunters are method hunters attempting to become one with the natural world. To become a part of this cycle using only the strenght of their muscles and abilility to stay calm under pressure.
I shot an arrow into the air,
Where it went I know not where.
After seeking both near and far,
I found it stuck in the radiator of my car.
I started thinking about what I would write on your subject. There isn't one specific quote that captures how I feel - but - I did realize that the essence of traditional bowhunting is captured (for me) throughout the Trad Gang. For instance, in every thread someone creates asking for opinions from other members of this forum you will see comments talking about the experience of the hunt - including comments about ethics (a word used a lot by the Trad Gang) and "fair chase". That definition might be of value in preparing for your essay. (http://www.huntfairchase.com/index.php/fuseaction/ethics.why)
For instance, right now there is a thread asking for input on using trail cameras, there was one up a little while ago asking about hunting on 2500 fenced acres, and so on.
Another aspect of my thoughts on your subject are visible when you consider that just be being a member of the Trad Gang - we have consciously chosen just about the most difficult form of hunting in common use in the world today. Not only is archery in general difficult - but - we have chosen to use bows, while modern in materials and construction, that are roughly the same as bows used 2000 years ago. The point of that choice is, obviously an individual one, but at its core is a statement that our goal is to experience the wild - without the need to make a kill.
Another example - do a search on any of the threads on DIY Elk hunting. As I am participating in one of those threads right now I know that you will see comments from people working for years to go on a hunt that offers, at best, around a 15% chance of success. In those Elk hunting threads written by people who have completed an Elk hunt you will read about all the planning, expense, work, and sacrifice the people involved have experienced - without ever reading a word about how the hunt was ruined because they didn't kill an elk.
Have fun with your essay.
