Howard Hill long bows
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:08:00 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has tried a long bow form Howard Hill Archery.

The site has no product reviews, which is kind of scary. I thought maybe I could get some input from you guys who may have bought one.

Absolutely brilliant customer service. Quick turnaround. Great product. Craig Ekin's a top bloke, for sure. If you're keen on a straight-end, D-section American longbow, this is the one. Here's a photo of mine:

And my favourite shot of my bow in action:

Craig makes among the very BEST examples of the Classic American Longbow. All his models come highly rated by fans of Hill style bows. Personally I have experience with the Big Five and the Wesley Special { a Big Five with an extra lam of Tonkin cane}. My Wesley is my "Go To" bow. Although I really like those Juniper limbs in the "Cheeta" ...

Why yes - here's my halfbreed (named Chili Maker)...

It is new as of this summer and is the first (and, so far, only) longbow I've ever owned.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.  Craig was great to work with and I'm very satisfied with the bow.

Classy bowyerm who makes a great product and has for years. Got my first Hill in early September. Killed a nine point Buck in Oklahoma Oct. 11th. The bow is 66", 57@28. Smooth as silk. This was my first D-shaped LB. It will not be my last.

I have to second everyone's opinion of the Hill bows, however I would like to add this. A lot of people believe the Hill bow is made of "Tonkin" cane, that is not so. Tonkin cane rarely is found in diameters of more than 2 1/2" at the butt. Its impossible to get a lamination wide enough to make a bow with Tonkin.

Aromakr is right on. Hill made a special trip to Japan to secure the type of bamboo he wanted to use. If you look at the pics of Dick's visit to Craig's shop there is a pic of the crate the bamboo came in.
Tokin cane comes from the Tokin Provience of China.
I would suggest you try one first if you have not shot a Hill style before.
I have heard nothing but good things about Craig and his family at Howard Hill Archery.

Howard Hill bows are one of the best in a traditional straight longbow....
If your going to have a collection of bows you need one of his in your collection.
Theres a love hate relation ship with Hill bows, people eithe Love them or Hate them....
Most of the people who dislike them only try one once and the gemeraly hold the bow wrong and use to lite of an arrow with them, A Hill bow needs to be handled properly when shot right they are loved....
There a great bow for Hunting, they are a natural pointer and are very lite in the hand....
Try one and fall in Love with them....

I'll second whoever said that, if you've never shot this style of bow (and grip), try one first.  I'd say that with ANY bow.

Not to stir the pot, but there's no such thing as a bow that, for everyone, falls into the "you can't go wrong with one" category--otherwise there would only be one bowyer in business, or at best everyone would be copying that style, and you'd never see a used one for sale.

Heck, I've been shooting the same bow for a dozen years or so, I've refused several offers to buy it (not for sale), but I'd never say "you can't go wrong with one of these!" because what I love you might not care for at all.

I don't remember every hearing anything the least bit negative about Craig or his operation, but that style bow just isn't for everyone.  I'm no expert by any stretch, but I know a little about shooting a bow--they just don't fit me--not just HH, but any bow that style.

I don't like that style grip, and the arthritus in my elbow won't tolerate the shock--at least not with the several different ones I've shot, including one or two of Bob Wesley's personal "Wesley Specials".  Obviously they can be shot very well, and some folks love them, but only you can decide if they are "the bow" for you.  Again, I'd say that about ANY bow.

Chad

The right arrows will go along way  with hill style  bows! they like heavy wood! The design will cast a  heavy shaft like no other and it will amaze you in it's performance! I own several and it is a joy shooting them all,One of my friends runs a Traditional archery shop and get to shoot lots of bows and I like the hills best! MIKE

Well, my 2 cents!  I have been shooting traditional for about 10 years, built a few bows, dealt with some bowyers.  Seem for some reason to struggle a little with the longbow.  This year I finally decided to purchase what I always wanted.  I bought a Howard Hill "Redman" from Craig.  He is a delight to talk to on the phone or email and really knows his stuff.  I recieved my bow 30 days from him recieving the full price and order.  After receiving the bow, I of course inspected it, then went to the range after putting a hasty nock set on it, and WOW!!  I was first impressed the the lightness in the hand.  The grip felt really great (struggled with trying to decide over straight, dished or locator).  I was not grouping well and by no means was close to robin hooding any.  But, it was not the bows fault, The Hill bows love a heavy arrow and knowing this thanks to help from the fellow Hill enthusiast, made up some heavier arrows and wow, tight groups, very forgiving bow, not as sensitive as some others.  As stated above, this bow is not for everyone, you really need to shoot this bow with a bent elbow.  After messing around with it, and loved it so much purchased the "Sirocco".  I decided to go to Bob Wesley shooting school.  I strongly recommend to anyone interested in learning the Hill method, before purshasing a new bow, to take what bow you have and go to it, alot to learn.  We spend alot of money on camo, hunts, gimmicks and gadgets, and bows, but I think going to learn from bow was money well spent!!!  Craig makes a great product especially for the price he asks.  As others have said try a few if you can and go from there.  By the way after attending Mr. Wesley school and 6th day of season in Illinois, shot a doe trotting at 20 yards, could not of done it with out his instruction and the bow.
