Say I wanted to tackle a 70# bow...
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:46:00 PM »
Okay...if I wanted to do something crazy and tackle a project bow, something I could work into over time.

What arrows would I need for a bow that is 70 lbs at 29"?  I have some Beman MFX classic's in 340 spine that are 30.5" with brass inserts.  I could put various point weights in and play around with them...

I think without overshooting it I could have some fun with it.

Just wondering!

Still don't know if people will be able to help you but they'll likely need to know what the shelf is like.  Cut-past-center, Cut-to-center, just a shelf etc?

My recurve, 70@29 is cut past center shoots MFX 340's great. I shoot 30" arrows with 100 grain inserts and 160 grain points, total arrow weight is 630 grains. The same arrow is a little stiff for my longbow which is also 70@29 and cut just shy of center.
I use both bows for 3d, field, hunting etc.

Sorry forgot to post that...not cut to center.  It is a 50's style recurve.

I'd love to be able to put 200 to 220 gr points on the 340's with brass adaptors.  Wow would that be a great combo.

Thanks,

Josh

I have a bow similar to that. It's a Black Widow SAIII that is 68# @ 28", with me drawing 29". I used 30" CX Heritage 350s, with 100 grain brass inserts and 125 grain broadheads. They worked really well on feral goats! I bet that combination would work for you.

Whoops! Can the above! I just read that it's not cut past centre. In that case, I would put at least a 125 grain steel adaptor up-front, and try maybe a 125 grain broadhead or greater. I would suspect something like that would work, because I shot the same arrow from my 78# @ 29" Black Widow longbow (cut to centre) with 200 grains of broadhead on top of the 100 grain brass insert. So you'd need even more than that up-front, which would give you an arrow up around 750 to 800 grains, with high FOC.

Ben...that thing would take a beast of an animal down for sure.  I'm thinking about it...

I think some 100 grain steel adaptors and 125 to 150 snuffers would be wicked...with my 340's.

Wow would that be awesome on KE.

Yep, that last set-up took down a big bull camel with one arrow.

Have fun!

i have a 69#@28" recurve that is cut to centre. i shoot 75/95 g/tips. 100gr inserts, 240gr b/head. inside i've got a piece of white 8gr/" wt tube that is 36mm long. inside that i've got a piece of 4mm diameter welding rod. (fits perfectly) that bit sits upfront and it is held there by some 3gr/" black wt tube that fills the rest of the arrow. 780gr total. this bow, like you, i'm working up to. was setting it up for buff hunting but i'm going to canada now. is there anything over there i could use it on?? Oliverstacy- I am currently hunting with an old Super Kodiak that is 73-74# at my 29" draw and I'm using 2317s and GamegetterII 300 shafts cut to 29.75". They weigh 630-640 grains and perform real well- I don't know much about carbons but the deflection on these aluminums is .300 for the GamegetterIIs and .297 for the 2317s. I build my sideplate out so it is definately not center shot. Same arrows work from 68 and 69# bows. G'luck                              Grant
