How many use attractants?
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:39:00 AM »
rather it be scents or bait?
If so what do you use?
How do you use it?
And why?

I never used any myself but I'm thinking about trying something around a tree stand that will make them pause and investigate in the area/spot I want to shoot.

Any product recommendations for this purpose?

TIA

I have used attractans with mixed results. I usually urinate on scrapes and occasionally use throw some wall hanger in them. Just urinating in them seems to keep the action up in the area. Some time scents get the deer too wired and they are on edge when they come in. Over all I like natural movement.

I use trails end every year. Used a buck bomb today. Had a buck looking for the can 5 mins. after it had emptied. So if you use one, squirt a couple places hold on to it, get in you stand, push the nozzle down so it will stay and throw it right before day light or right at first light.
Plus I am a big fan of Knight&Hale products. You usually get more and it cost less and works great.

i was never a believer in scents until last year where i hunted a spot where the buck to doe ratio was better.

in the past scents did nothing for me...last year tried a drag rag and some scent wicks and when the rut was on i had these young bucks trampin all over the place following my rag every inch i placed it.  They were even workin with the grunts and bleats.

at one point i had 5 bucks within sight and got 2 of them to fight just teasin them.  im a believer if the conditions are right!  im hoping to have the same luck this year!

I have used both with mixed results so now I usually don't use either.
I used to use fox pee(from a DNR friend) that worked well as a cover and attractant. I have had deer(and foxes) follow my trail, with nose to the ground, all the way to my stand. I have tried the commercial stuff and never had luck with it.
It seems to me that as much of the commercial stuff that is out there, the deer are getting used to it and steer away from it. JMO    Pat

I have had some success with a drag rag @ a fresh locally bottled doe in heat urine.
