Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Oops but it whitened the finish in a test area almost immediately. Must be the Toluene. W-D 40 was a good idea. I forgot how well it cleans fishing rods. Unfortunately, it did not work on the glue. Having no luck chemically, I tried mechanical removal - carful use of razor blade followed by sanding & polishing with 2000 grit sand paper and 3M Ultra Fine Scotch-Brite pad. The mechanical removal worked very well with no damage and no evidence the glue was ever there.
