As I got settled back in I saw a muledeer doe about a quarter of a mile away skimming the hilltops. But she wasnt alone. She had a friend a little friend but def had antlers and he wasnt planning on leaving here which would make a stalk even tougher with 4 eyes instead of 2. I watched them for 10 min or so trying to get an Idea of where they were going when I heard a twig snap behind me thinking it was the guy with me getting up ready to leave. Turns out it was him getting situated to draw on an unsuspecting doe at 8 yards. But no luck we are still not sure If my turning around spooked her or his attempt to draw but she ran off just the same. He said he was glad either way cuz his parents were getting grumpy that he had 2 deer in the freezer already and he said he would rather use it later anyway cuz there is a lot of season left..I felt bad just the same but im confident he didnt mind being close was good enough.

After we stood in teh nook between the bales and trees discussing what we had seen and what our best route of what we saw would be. The two mule deer were the only options when he a buck slowly working from teh grove out to the cornfield. We froze kinda caught in a standstill but slowly crept back to the bales for a little cover and watch where the buck was going to go as we thought he was going straight away across the cornfield to a grove full of scrapes every year that we figured he would go bed in...When all of the sudden he slowly comes around the corner of the grove at 25-30 yards having no clue what may be in store....

We froze not knowing what the next move would be. He probably did better than I did even though he is only 16. The buck slowly walked around the corner getting closer by the step. There was no way for us to sink any deeper into the bales. I looked over at him and he was just sitting calmy and sit down his bow showing he was going to let it be my play. The buck stopped at about 12 yards and tried to figure out what was growing out of the bale pile but decided that it wasnt as interesting as the cornfield he was heading to. As he turned to walk away I made my move all I remember was gripping my bow starting to slowly pull back the awesome yellow and orange fletched arrow and dont remeber anything till the arrow hit..It wasnt my best shot to say the least it was a touch High and a little far back. I could see the arrow sticking out as he ran off. There wasnt a pass through which really had me worried as the shot was a little high but didnt come out meaning less blood trail and he was headed through a grove and into a uncut cornfield.....

We heard him crash back around into the grove but not into the corfield so certain he was in the grove and not 100% certain on the shot we left immediately to leave him alone for a few hours. This being the worst part of the hunt but I was confident that I should have gotten a lung and probably liver but it was still rough not knowing and hoping that he wasnt suffering to much.. I said many prayers in the next hour or two and felt comforted by time we went to look knowing that I had made a good enough shot to end it quickly. There wasnt much for a blood trail but was able to walk up to him...It was done my four years of getting mad at turkeys cuz they wouldnt do what they were supposed to, my hikes through big hills just trying to get close enough to a mule deer. or all the hours in a brush pile just waiting for an unsuspecting deer to walk by...It unbelieveably happened when least expected and totally out of the ordinary...I know many people that feel they d rather be lucky thatn good and that was for sure the case this time as we wer not planning to even see anything up close. Wed hunted this place three previous years concentrating on muley but turns out before they chop corn it aint to bad forwhitetail either..
