Punched through the carpet
« on: October 31, 2008, 07:22:00 PM »
got a 6' by 10' brand new peice of carpet in trade for a flu shot just last night.  went out to shoot, thinking i could back up more than I am used to doing.  shot about ten shots, then i had a bad release and completely missed the target, punched a hole through the carpet and busted one of my first home-made arrows into the rock fence behind it.  shot it again from about 35 yards w/ an arrow with no point and it punched through also.  I want something that is not super expensive (down here in texas the hay bales are pretty high dollar) and can stop my arrows.  any suggestions?  thanks a ton everybody, -Lee

Are you folding the carpet over?

go to ups and ask when if they have any belting from the conveyor.  It is great for backstops and you can't shoot through it with a BH.

This is a target made of Celo Tex. It is used as siding when building homes. It can be bought at Home Depot, Lowes etc. The cost for the target in the picture was about $80, the last on lasted 14 years!
I put a roof over it to keep it dry. Comes in 4x8 sheets, I cut it into 4' strips that are 16" deep, stack them up. You can rotate them front to back, top to bottom and they last a good long time.

In my experience if you don't fold the carpet over itself, ie hang it over a rope or something, then it won't absorb the force nearly as well.

Hang it over a rope or cable so it doubles its thickness or cut it and hang it twice, worked for me till I got a pound bale.

I agree with wingnut, old conveyor belt works good.
