Fluorescent orange while bowhunting

Just wanted to show some photos of my hunt yesterday.  One of them shows what fluorescent camo orange (required during any gun or shotgun season here) looks like in our eyes and the supposed dimension that game sees it.

This one is me standing with my back to the camera in a patch of beech trees.  The second is same photo in sepia or supposedly what animals (other than birds) see. It's interesting to see how the orange disappears and becomes just camo.
It's obvious that in the beech trees and lighter areas, a flourescent orange camo or other lighter plaid would be better than the darker plaid wool I have on in this instance.

Nice pics George.  What longbow is that in the pics?

Only orange required is during overlaps with early muzzleloader (250 sq inches when moving, 100 sq inches displayed 360 degrees while stationary.) and fall turkey season (100 sq inches on head, none while stationary).  I tend to wear an orange hat while moving through the entire season...Mike

It is fall turkey season now, and when they hit the woods the first day, I want more than an orange hat.        I use an orange band around the tree when I sit for a spell.  

That bow is a Raptor Signature by Ted Fry.  It's a really great shooting bow with that forward handle.  The limbs are yew under clear glass. Tips are antler and riser is zebrawood/cocobola I believe.  I traded for the bow.

George, I agree totally on the orange, just wanted to put it out there for those who didn't know.  I was out this morning and it sounded like rifle season used to sound.  In fact, I only sat till 9:30 there were guys shooting up the woods everywhere.  I usually hang my hat on a limb near where I'm sitting.

I wear onrange when out hunting, not only for safty but so i can small game hunt with my bow too, and still be legal.  On thursday when it was real cold out i put on a solid FO hunting suit and had a deer come to within 4yards, never saw mee but did wind me and took off before could shoot, then yesterday nov 1 i was out in FO agin derr came close never saw me but moved around me caaught my wind took off and i got a running 25yard shot and Got the deer,  Good post george.

Muzzle loader started here in NH yesterday, and soon gun to follow.I wear, like you, a blaze orange camo vest during this time of year, and wear a green led headlamp walking out after quit time even if I don't really need it to make sure anyone recognizes I am another hunter.Beautiful pics, nice buck rub. Novahunter raised a good point about the taking of small game while pursuing deer with the bow.  Our regs are somewhat vague with regard to carrying a mixed quiver, (ie. broadheads and blunts), and F.O is required while Small game hunting.

George, you are a cruel dude !!!
You have pointed out that plaid is as potent as "neon blue-fuzzy-willow" patterns.
Then you add the part showing how, 'hunter orange' does blend in as easily...
Besides all that; your pics are making 'Brushpopper' jealous...and me, too!!

noavhunter, I asked that very question last year at the Sportsman's show.  I do wish they would clear it up in the book.  I was told that once you attempt to take a squirrel, rabbit, turkey, etc... that you then become a small game, turkey hunter rather than an archery hunter and are required the orange for that species.  Very good point...Mike

Billy, if one stands still, it really doesn't matter.  Those darker plaids look like any other limb, etc.  The orange quickly look likes the lighter leaves and blends in.  I have a gray checked wool sweater that almost disappears in the leaves...but it's too warm right now to wear it.

I love hunting in the beech trees...the younger ones hold their leaves nearly all winter so they make a great hiding area.

In PA you can carry anything you want in your quiver. But, you must only shoot cutting edge type points at deer. I typically have one blunt and four broadheads in my bow quiver. I'll add another blunt or two when using a back quiver.

Right now, with turkey season in, an orange hat is required while moving about. I wear the vest too. Too many idiots here in PA that will shoot at anything. And for some unknown reason a Fall turkey hunter can use a rifle!

George, you still have leaves!? Funny how one mountain and 1000' can make for such a difference. Scotty and I still hunted in 8" snow the other night. Between us we saw 12 does in a quick 45min hunt! Cool!
