question from an old "newbie"
« on: November 03, 2008, 04:03:00 PM »
I recently decided to get back to shooting a bow again.
It's been quite a while and what with old timers my memory isn't what it should be.

I picked up a Bear Grizzly, 45#, AMO 56", and have a few questions about the brace height.
It seems awfully high to me, 8 - 7/8".

I used to draw 30" back in "the day". My anchor was my thumb joint touching the back of my jaw bone.
With this bow I can barely make it to the corner of my mouth!
My old Bear Grizzly from years ago, 55#, was a longer bow and the draw was smoother and not the same as this one.
I realize a shorter bow will "stack" but this seems way too much.

Also with this bow strung I feel as if the bow is being strained at less than the corner of the mouth anchor.

My question is what should the brace height be and what string length??

Any and all advice will be appreciated. Thanks!   :help:

Welcome

Well 8 to 8 1/2 should get it done, I have a few that wit to 9". The string should be 52" I like em a little long and twist em up. TJM   Have fun flinging them arras. As far as anchor I use middle finger in mouth what ever you choose do it consistantly..

Thanks for the response and the welcome.

I guess I will have to change my anchor point.  I had used the longer draw with the anchor being thumb on back of jaw for 30+ years but it seems I can't get that length of pull on the 56 incher.

Welcome back to the bow and welcome to Tradgang! How long have you been out of the loop? I wonder if it's like riding a bike.

Hey deadfall, welcome to the site from the other side of the big river.
Sounds like the string might be a bit too short. Try a new string before you change your shooting method too much. Even if it has been 30+ years, your body and mind will remember it after a short while.

Thanks guys!
I started serious shooting my bow when I was about 14.
Shot and hunted until I was in my early fifties.
Will be 65 in two months and didn't realize how much I missed it.
Real sorry I sold my old Grizzly.I bought it in 1964. Shot sweet and not like the one I have now.
This one seems to come to it's full draw limit a heck of a lot sooner.
And to answer your question, it is like riding a bike or kissing a girl.  You don't forget!!  It comes right back!!
Hey ishiwannabe we are neighbors!!
Like to meet you sometime.

Sure thing. We do a lot of rabbit hunting once we get some snow, let me know if you are inetersted. Also a decent club by Albany.
You have to go to Shawn's bunny hunt too....great time in every aspect.
