« on: November 04, 2008, 12:55:00 PM »
As the title says, i'll be gone all next week hunting in WV with a friend at around 2500-3000 EL. Going for Bear and Whitetail. What i really need is advice on taking Bear up there, TIps, Tricks, finding them,  bringing them to me etc.
I will be hunting them on the ground and maybe from tree stand, but i would like to stay on the ground....

so all you experts out there..What say you. Thanks again.

I love spot and stock, so, I would get to where you could glass then go get him.

Bear are a lot like pigs, you must have the wind in your face, if you do, you can get real close, also shoot forward in the chest cavity or quartering away is your best shot 1/3 off the bottom.

Have fun and pick a spot

I'd wait until he moves the near side front leg out of the way to make sure that big, heavy shoulder bone is completely away from the vitals-particularly in a broadside shot. Don't rush that shot. Your "emotional experience" will be a bit different than hunting whitetails!

Remember you're the predator, and take that attitude; its the very "odd" black bear that is agressive or dangerous.  Depends, but they don't always hang in the same spot for long, so if you are able to spot n stalk don't take too much time.

My advice is don't do it. Bear hunting is addictive.  I've called in a few with predator calls, it's real exciting knowing they are coming to eat.
Pick a spot.

I'm with Joe I love the thrill of calling. With bears alot of calling is required as there atteniton span is that of a 3 year old, but they are truly old wise animals....Call softly and soud like an infant, You will be amazed at what you see, dont be supprised when deer start looking for ya.  Remember this an animal can rear you and ten minutes later pin point you within a few feet...

have fun

Find out what they are eating. Up here it's apples this time of year. The corn, berries and  nuts are gone. Bears will be packing on the #'s in preparation for the long nap and can be found feeding at any time of day.
