Yesterday afternoon I decided to pull out a selfbow that I got from Duck'n to see if I could hit the broadside of a barn with it. I had shot about 15 arrows out of it when I finally figured out how to shoot it accurately. Seems I need a severe cant to keep my arrows where I want them. Anyways, as I was walking to my target to retrieve my arrow I saw a little bunny feeding about 50 yrds in the field. I walked over to my truck and pulled out a homemade arrow tipped with an alligator gar scale. It is a full lenght P.O. cedar with natural feathers that I collected of the ground and the scale comes from a 7' gar that I took a few years ago. There is no glue on the arrow, the feathers were eyeballed into position and tied on using fly-tiers thread. To get a little bit more foward balance, wrapped the tip with 100gr of lead wire, from my fly-tieing kit. The arrow come in at about 575gr and is accurate to about 15yrd with 18" of penetration into a block target.
I picked up the arrow and started stalking/walking up to the bunny and at 10yrd I drew on him, picked my spot and released. The arrow flew true and hit behind the last rib and exited tight behind the opposite shoulder dropping him dead. The arrow went in all the way to the fletching. If I can figure out a way to sharpen the scales properly, I will end up trying them for javalina later this season.
