What's the difference???? (longbows)
« on: November 09, 2008, 11:22:00 PM »
I'm interested in trying a Longbow and was just curious what is the difference between the shorter longbows versus the longer styles around 68"? I'm sure some of it is just personal preference but would like to know if one is more forgiving or performs better than the other. Also would it make alot of difference seeing as how I stand 6'3" and draw around 29" to 29.5". All opinions and knowledge wanted, thx.

I'm no expert but usally shorter longbows have more R/D in them. And they will give more performance then a straight limbed longbow. And then you have your foward risers like Super Shrews, that design allows for a longer draw while having a shorter bow.Straight limbed bows I feel draw smoother when they are longer, with your draw length a 68"-70" would most likely draw smoother then a 64" straight limbed bow for you.You would most likely feel the shorter bow stack with longer draws. But a 62" or 64" with R/D come draw smooth with your longer draw. But like you say personal preference comes into play,I like a straight limb bow like Hill's.They may not be as fast my R/D bows but they can be a joy to shoot.

How do you hunt? Choose a bow that fits you and fits your style. While a 68" bow may be fine for still hunting your woods, it may be a poor choice for a ground blind or treestand or limit treestand placement or require a specific style/type of blind or treestand to use effectively. Speed is great but don't sacrifice quiet for speed, the arrow is never going to beat the sound of the bow to the target. I draw a solid 30" again and have hunted mainly with a 56" Black Swan this season. It is designed to handle the draw length as are many others. Ask the bowyer many questions because the odds are you won't be the first to ask and they'll have an idea of which of their bows will work best for you.

I hunt on the ground with a 68" longbow and no problems. Have to bust thick brush carrying it. The slim design makes it easy. A hand pruner makes my brush blind just as doable as when carrying my 50" SKB.
The older I get, the better I was.
