Ever been charged by hogzilla?
« on: November 10, 2008, 12:04:00 PM »
Well I haven't either-it just felt like it!
My buddy had arrowed a very nice sow that we were looking for. It got well past dark and we were in some very dense brush amongst squealing and grunting pigs that we could only hear.
So we step into a clearing to catch our bearings, and all of a sudden this big boar comes thundering out of the darkness snapping and barking at us!
There was zero time to react; I mean they are impossibly fast; he ran between the two of us inches away-what an underwear changing experience!

You met my wife !

OK  really..   dontcha just love when something happens and gets your heart really racing.  Especially when nobody gets hurt in the deal.

Whether it is a hog or a bear or a bull elk..

or an amorous buck standing about three feet behind you (while in a ghillie suit on the ground) and you just remembered the doe in heat scent wafer clipped to your side quiver.....

Oh Gosh !

Thanks for your story.  Never had your experience, maybe someday.

Howzit All,

Never been charged by Hogzilla but a smaller boar thinking he was.

Shot a small boar a few years ago late in the afternoon. Da bugga spun around after being hit snapping at the arrow. After a revolution, he turned and faced me. With only open area all around us, he figured I must have been the one  to spoil his day. Charged head on and died right at my feet. THAT---- my friends was an underwear changing experience! Ever since when hunting pigs, I try and figure out an exit stage left plan jus incase da bugga wants to "play". Trees nearby is always good.

Just last week I posted about my friend Rich getting flattened by a large boar. Luickly he didn't get hurt. Could've been ugly.

As someone posted, nothing like hunting them on the ground to get the adrenaline flowing. Me I just stock up on new underwear wheneva I go jus incase.

Aloha,

       Mark

Yikes Bjorn!  I feel your anxiety even though I was 2,000 miles away.  That must indeed have been a scary thing.  You are one of the hog-huntingest fellows I know!

never been charged but i've had a couple to snap their teeth at me late in the afternoon.  i did have to shoot a 175 pound boar in august because he kept walking toward me.  i had just shot a 50 pounder with my flintlock and was walking out down a dirt road.  the big fellow and a sow walked out about 25 yards away.  didn't really want to shoot another hog but he started snapping his teeth and the hair on his back stood up.  i told him if he took another step toward me i was going to let him have it.  he did and i did.  thank god i reloaded after the first hog.  took him through the heart and he ran about 20 yards and crashed.  i think because of their bad eyesight they have little fear of anything when it starts to get dark.  that's about the only time i worry about hogs.

You mess with hogs long enough and you WILL get hooked. I've been knocked down and run over a couple of times. My tracking dog saved me from a big boar one time that knocked me down and had plans to cut me every direction. The dog was with me that time and she grabbed hold of him. Gave me time to get back to my feet. That was a close one.

I've seen and had many, many hogs charge. Hogs are in many ways the same as bears. They charge to scare the opponent away. 90% of charging hogs turn away before getting into boot kicking, club swinging range. I carry a pick ax handle when tracking hogs. Numerous hunters have seen the results of carrying "Sweet Spot". That club has gotten me out of a few tight spots. Chris Kinslow says it makes a unigue sound when in use. Watch the pigs Bjorn. They'll get you when you are most complacient and think the coast is clear. Be well! CK

PS, A hogs eyesight is almost exactly the same as a human. They are ofter perceived as blind or can't see well because they get distracted by feeding. Hogs communicate constantly when in group situation. They forget about "seeing" while feeding because everyone in the pack is grunting back and fourth that everything is clear. My pet wild hogs could pick me out of a croud of people at 150 yards. I've played every eyesight trick in the book to test this theory. If you think he can't see I promise you he can. Deer see much less than hogs. It's a matter of concentration. Pigs sences are easily overcome by their gluttony. Enter food into any hog situation and you've leveled the field on his sences. CK

I've had that happen in the boundary waters in Northern Minnesota with a Bear, I didn't get hurt, and the bear just walked away, but it seem like my heart was pounding for hours, when it was only a few minutes afterwards, it does take your hands a little bit more time to quit shaking.

I was charged by a boar last year after I shot it.  Found out while field-dressing that it was already injured and probably in a bad mood before I shot it.

Thankfully there was a climbing tree close by and I was able to get elevated beyond reach in a hurry.

Don't know what I would do in S.Texas or the S.Louisiana swamp where there is no where to go?
