Had a big rush tonight in my driveway
« on: November 11, 2008, 08:55:00 PM »
Got a call from a friend who was visiting our mutual friend and neighbor to say he saw a huge 8pt. buck on my property chasing does.  News to me as I hadn't seen this one and lead to one of the most bizarre events I have ever had in hunting.

Suited up but the back yard was full of does so I figured I'd ease out the door and they would ease down into field and work back after I was in my ground blind.  The monster suddenly appeared and chased a doe across my lawn and caught me redhanded on the steps.  I froze, he went back to trailing the doe and I eased down behind a bush but he kept checking me out.

When he moved out of my sight I circled left around the sheds, vehicles and hid in the drivway between my boat and my utility trailer. He kept looking in my direction and a hedgerow separated us by approx. 40+ yards.  As he worked left he came to within 35 yards but I didn't shoot due to my low position and not sure of the yardage and he was very wired.  I was hoping the doe and buck would work left and I could scoot left behind the truck and get a closer shot.  The doe trotted back down to the pines with the buck in pursuit so no shot!

The rest of the evening was uneventful but what a heart pounding adventure in my OWN DRIVEWAY!!!!  I try him tomorrow morning but my friend is hounding me to come up and shoot him with his wheelie bow and can't understand why I didn't shoot him at 35 yards.

Do they make ABAT Camo (all boats all trailers)??

Sounds like a heart pumping experience, and I wish I could have been looking out your window watching the whole thing!

Good luck in the morning!

Unfortunately I have plenty of bucks running all over my yard, some years they are the only ones I see during the season. I say unfortunately because they know that I'm honor bound not to shoot any of them while they're there. I gave my word that I would never shoot any deer within sight of my house. Good thing I'm surrounded by hunting land and I only need to go about 200yds before I lose sight of the house.

I have pictures now.  Unfortunately I must wait until Sunday to post them as I'm in PA babysitting my two grandaughters until then.

Last afternoon I couldn't hunt because I had to be a good neighbor and grandpa take his car to the shop and leave to go babysitting.  You know the rest....he came back and chased does all through my fields and yard all afternoon.  He chased some does twice around my pool and around the parking area again.

I finally shot him...but with only a camera from the kitchen window.  Tune in for pics Sunday.

I miss Maryland whitetail hunting... thick as squirrels and almost as dumb. If you don't mind hunting withing sight of buildings and roads it can be really hot, just not the "wilderness" experience most of us think of.

If I shoot him I'll try not to include the pool, house, boat or vehicles in the background.

My sika deer territory in Dorchester Co. is about as rough and desolate piece of swampland, marsh and forest you'd ever hope to see though.  People have gotten lost in there.

Sure beats the 163 miles one way I have to drive to hunt. Just don't know if I could release an arrow from the tongue of my boat trailer with my wife beating me with her broom.  :banghead:
