Who Hunts with a Back Quiver?

I suggest going to some shoots and seeing what is available, then asking if you can try some out briefly.  Some will just plain not fit  /  work.  One of the sponsors here (Safari)has a nice side quiver that is a kinda hybrid that I like very much,  as long as I am not wearing a bulky stuff at belt level (like my Bison gear pack)  It is quiet, easy to use etc etc.  My back quiver is fun too, but is a bit on the noisy side.  I have gotten over or overcome most of the issues regarding getting caught up in brush, but I cannot get away from tht bit of noise.  But hey.... nothing is perfect.  They all have good and bad qualities.  Play till you find one  (or 6 ) that you like and go with it.

I've used backquivers for 20 years and have tried all the other types, but stay with the backwarmer.  For me it's the best kind.  Most of the quivers I see are too stiff, too small, too short, not hanging correctly and not used correctly.  Like David says,  a properly made Hill style backquiver is a joy to use, doesn't spook game, is quiet and can carry your lunch.

  I've had deer watch me draw an arrow out of the quiver and not spook....so much for that theory.  If the quiver hangs more off the shoulder and horizontal, the arrows will not rattle....so much for that theory.  If you learn to slide the quiver around with your bowhand when going through brush, they won't be hanging up and making noise....so much for that theory.

The greatest majority of bowhunters I've heard talk about the negative aspects of a backquiver, have never, ever, used a good one correctly.

With all the info given in the thread, I've looked at the Howard Hill 22" back quiver, Jack Bower's  Chief quiver and Safari Tuff Arrowmaster quiver.  With the broadhead attached to my arrows, the total length of my arrow is 35". The Arrowmaster does have an option for arrows longer than 33". Looks like I've given myself a headache, but a nice headache.

I have a Arrowmaster Quiver great quiver but I want to hunt with a Hill style back quiver. Maybe it just seems right with a longbow in my hand. Thanks for all the info I guess the only question I have now is how big a quiver I need. Most all the Hill style quiver I have seen were big enough to carry a doz arrows. I guess better to big than to little.

I use a home-made ratten quiver for small game hunting and a catquiver for chasing bucks.
Ratten quiver is pretty well-adapted to hunting in a wetland environment.

I love back quivers, I make my own out of soft oil tan leather with a heavy skirting bottom. they conform to your back and keeps the arrows quiet. I also have a file case and a case for a small headlight attached to the back. I usually carry 6 broadheads and up to another dozen blunts and field points. I have tried all kinds of quivers and nothing works as good for me as a back quiver

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Arrowmaster for one reason. The longest commercially made back quiver I can find is the 22" back qiiver made by the Howard Hill company. With my 35" broadhead tipped arrows, that leaves 13" of arrow length sticking out the top of the quiver. Also, I only take 6 arrows with me when I'm stalking javelina. In a ground blind for hunting deer or turkey, I only take 4 arrows with me. With a back or side quiver, I want my aluminum arrows to be quiet when I'm walking along, not catch on limbs if I have to get through some low lying thick stuff and be easy to withdraw from the back quiver without making any noise. I know this is difficult with aluminum arrows, but if these things cannot be accomplished, then it's back to a bow quiver for me and that is something I'd like to avoid. Since I use a two piece Boa bow quiver now, it's not that easy to remove the quiver from my bow. A back  or side quiver solves this minor problem and keeping my feathers dry in a misting fog is another plus for the back or side quiver since the feathers can be covered.

Love my back quiver, Once you get used to them and learn to slide them under your arm when going through the brush they work great.
 I have a leather lace that pulls them tight so they don't rattle and I have one in my hand reday for use and one lose in the quiver. Works great for me.
 I hunt with stone tips and have learned that the fingers of a leather glove work great for tip protectors. I just buy a cheap pair of all leather gloves and cut the fingers off. Slip them on and slide a rubber band over it. that way they stay on when in the quiver and remove easy when needed.     Keenan
