Arrow help for Martin Hunter...
« on: November 16, 2008, 03:43:00 PM »
I'm gearing up my Martin Hunter 45# and would like some help concerning arrows, please.

I draw it to 30" (so probably about 50# at that length) and i'm shooting off the shelf.

Where do i start with arrows?

I like what i've been reading about Woodsman broadheads and i definitely want to use wood shafts.  How do i make the most effective arrow with those two in mind?

Thanks for any help.

Stan

Thanks guys.

So using the formula on the link that Ben put i would be looking at 80# spine to start with...

Modern Martin Hunter
50#-ish draw weight
31" arrow for 30" draw
D97 string
125 grain woodsman

Would that be correct?

What's the best wood for that?

Does anyone know what weight arrow that would give me?

I'd say a spine of 70-75 would work.

Would that get me an arrow over 500 grain or would i have to put more weight up the front?

If i wanted to put more weight up front with a Woodsman can i do that and if so how?

If you're keen on heavy weight, get some Douglas fir or laminated birch.

Thanks Ben, it's not that i'm keen on heavy weight but was simply wondering if something like a 75# spine shaft with a 125 grain woodsman would be around about 500 gr or not.  And also would just like to learn as much as possible about making wooden arrows including things like adjusting the up front weight.

From memory, my 85# spine cedars, 30" long and wearing 160 grains of point weight, had a total mass of 620 grains. So, at a guess, you should be able to clear 500 grains.

With the same length and broadhead, my Douglas fir arrows are 775 grains (115# spine).

With the same length and 190 grain heads, my laminated birch were 750 grains total mass (85# spine).

I am looking at a cedar shaft here that is 31" long and spines 75#. It has stain and cap dip and crest, no nock or feathers yet and it weighs 438 grains. I think a Woodsman would set it off nicely for your bow.
