Deer bellow?
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:52:00 AM »
This Saturday I saw a 4 point chasing a doe and the sound he made was something Ive never heard before. It sounded like a bull type bellow. He kept doing it as long as he was chasing her.It really reminded me of a red deer which Ive heard on TV only but it was very similar. Is this a call made when the doe is ready to give in or what?Ive never heard a deer make so much noise before.I saw that buck roar call advertised and it was very differentb than that.Anyone????

I did... and he was close enough to see him put his head back and open his yap and let out this guttaral sound... It was a small 4pt chasin a bunch of does who wouldn't stand and he was soooo frustrated!

It is a wierd, wierd sound to be sure... about like I make sometimes trying to tie on a #18 trico when I forgot my glasses streamside and the trout are biting!  :)   AAAarrrrgggggggggggggg!

You got it Doc!!! Thats exactly it! Funny thing is he made a conventional "brrrrrrrrp" grunt right before I saw him but after he came into view he did that aaaargggggghh! for a long, long time. I did not see what happened to the doe he was chasing but he came back solo bout 1/2 hour later.I guess we'd  probably all make a similar sound if we had as short a time to take care of business as he does.  :biglaugh:

Yep, I watched a buck for 45 min chasing does around once. He chased off one of the does with that sound and his tongue hanging out. Just turned toward her and... AAAArrrrggh!  Then he turned and followed the doe he was chasing right over to me. He's on the wall now. It was a cool thing to witness.
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

I watched a mature 8 point do it last year.Similar situation as what Doc had, the big boy and a small 8 point and a 4 pt chasing a doe that would not stand. The big boy was frustrated with trying to keep the little guys whipped out of the way and keep his girl corraled.I was frustrated with trying to get a shot at the big buck that run past me twice without slowing down.I even tried the loud bellow but it did not slow him down.

Isn't that the growl like the call made by Primos?  I thought I remember them saying the bucks do that because the doe will not stand.

Woods Wise calls makes a bellow call and use to have a tape that came with it but if I remember correctly it was the doe that made the bellow meaning she was ready to breed and breed now. He said  late in the rut or after it the bucks make a calf like bawl, kind of a social call more or less.

Izzy I have heard that one time this season and it was the first weekend, I watched the buck do the same as you described. His head was down and tipped back he was making the most horrific noise I have ever heard come out of a deer, when I first heard it I thought, what the heck was that? Then I saw him while he was doing it, kinda cool to watch.

See this  buck growl article .  I have a video with the natural sound and the artificial call version, but the copyright would prohibit posting these here, probably.

i saw 3 buck chasing 1 or two does last season.  one was a large framed buck, bout a 10 point, the other 2 were smaller, 6 and maybe a 4, they were in the brush along a ditch so i couldnt get a great look at em, but one of em bellowed, just like you described.  pretty weird, and made it a great experience.  first good chase i had ever seen.  ill never forget it.

I've heard the esterus bawl, too... and on tape somewhere...some whacked call came out many years ago and the local shop owner had to order one to try...we all split a gut when he let loose on it.

That one was more a "AAAAAHHHHeeemmmmmmreeeedddiiiieeeeee"

That buck one I saw/heard...was definitely... Aaaarrarrrrawwwwwwwwwwwwwww! cause he weren't gettit an he KNEW it! He was pure plumb frustrated.

Btw...I stayed in my stand a good 30 min afore I got down after that... I didn't want him gettin cornfused!      :knothead:
