Oh my, to get out just one more time before going to see the inlaws...Sun and Mon night were the kind of nights that make the year for a hunter. You know what I'm talkin about. The kind of hunts that stoke your fire up enough to get you through until next year.
Sun night was 18mph windy out in Warrenton, MO. Didn't think much would show, so I just enjoyed the orange cream-cicle sunset. About 10min before dark 4 does bust out of the corner of the field and start runnin' all over the place. Soon, out comes a little buck trailin' one of them. I can hear grunting behind me somewhere. Then all of a sudden here HE comes, gruntin' the whole way. Stopped him behind the tree only to have him run back the way he came.
Mon night I went back and hung a new stand where all the deer had headed the night before. Right at dark the wind just stopped, so I got out the old antlers and whacked em as loud as I could for 2min. 10min later the big boy shows up and comes right at me from the same corner the does came out of the night before. Long story longer, he came from 250 yards to 125, veered left at the last minute, then melted into that beautiful orange sunset...He's probably the first honest-to-goodness 140-class 8pt I've ever seen. You all should get out and hunt now!!
Best,
Dave
