Cant get my tips to stay glued on....
« on: November 21, 2008, 06:17:00 PM »
I cant get my tips to stay on. I'm using Bohning Ferr-l-tite. I'm using a lighter to melt the glue onto the wood. I then heat the tip until it melts the glue on the shaft and slides on. When I pull the arrow out of my target the tips keep coming off. Do I need to prep the tip someway? How long do I need to let them set before shooting?...Thanks Roy

Ferr-l-lite works ok for aluminum, but I find it is too brittle for glue-on points for wood arrows and weak.Take a 1/16-27 NPT pipe tap and tap some threads into the points to give them some teeth and then clean them with alcohol. You won't find these taps as most hardware stores,I got mine from a machinist supply house. For hot melt I use a milky white hot melt, like from 3Rivers or I still have some Bohning Stik-tite.This hot melt takes alittle more heat but stays more pliable then ferr-l-lite.And with threads taped into the point and the white type hot melt,I haven't lost any more points.Get a small propane torch, works better then a lighter.I glue on the points and press them hard and cool them down with a wet rag, then clean off excess.

I don't think you can get the glue hot enough with just a lighter.  I use a propane torch and the glue is actually boiling when I jam the hot tips onto the wood shafts.  Don't usually have any problems with them coming off.  Good luck!

Make sure there is no oil in the heads either. I got a bunch from Kustom King and the heads fell off. They said they don't sell many 145 grain heads and that their might have been oil in them. I has since replaced them and I used JB WELD...they aint coming off now EVER

I've used Ferr-l-Tite for many years with no problems..No one hit on the key...You HAVE to clean your points with alcohol or acetone. Soak them and clean them inside with a clean Q-tip. Doesn't hurt to rough up the inside surface with a rat tail file either. Dab it on the tapers, heat the point then slide it on and twist it to seat and smear the glue evenly. It helps to "burp" it after you first slide it on to release the expanding bubble of air trapped in the point.....O.L.

I use hot melt from Woodworkers supply, melt it with a candle, use alcohol on Q-tips to clean out the points and coarse sand paper to rough up the inside of the points...PR

I agree with O.L. Adcock.  I use them on woods as well, with no problem.  Make sure you apply the glue generously to the tapered point after cleaning it and tell us how it goes. -Lee

Thanks for the tips. I cleaned the tips the first time , but didnt rough them up. I'm going to try the ferr-l-tite again(bought 2 sticks).I have a small torch to heat them with this time.If this doesnt work then I'll try the hot melt..Thanks again.Roy

I heat the inside of the field tips to burn off any residue oil.  I found the Ferr-l-tite too brittle in cold weather.  I now use the soft, yellowish hot melt and I use a lot of it.  I don't rough up the tips, although that sounds like a good idea if one is having problems.

Make sure and use the milky or yellowish colored glue sticks. The clear ones don't hold too good.

Listen to OL.  He's got it right.  Surface preparation is the key to any good glue joint.  Rough up the surface and degrease.  Chad

I use Ferr-L-Tite with no problems, but I clean the inside of the points, and burn off anything inside them with a propane torch.

As for it being brittle in the cold, I don't know, but I have a sneaking suspicion if it is too cold for Ferr-L-Tite  it it too cold for me!:-)

I have found Ferr-l-tite to be kinda brittle in the winter months.  There is a glue Kustom King sells called Quick Stick that I think is way more adhesive than any other hot melt type of glue.  I have never lost a point in the summer or winter using it.  Also make sure you degrease the points before gluing.  I like to soak them in very hot water mixed with dish washing detergent and dried with a propane torch.

One more tip when I put the points on I put a magazine down on the countertop and stand the shaft up straight and push on it and hold it with pressure on it for about 10 seconds...PR

Make sure your tapers match and are as long as possible, the more surface for glue the better. I rough up the inside of the points with emery cloth then clean with acetone.

I use fer-l-tite with my woodies, and it works just fine, I use sterno to melt the glue though. Maybe you aren't using enough glue per head?

I also agree with O.L. that the points need to be preped. I soak my in acetone and clean with Q-tips I get at Fry's electronics. They have wood sticks not paper.
I use the glue sticks from Black Widow or 3-Rivers. I found Ferr-L-tite will become brittle after time.
