Luken's Island/ Need to get there more often
« on: November 26, 2008, 01:49:00 PM »
Luken's is a 10000 acre private track in eastern NC. My dad is a member, but I rarley go down to hunt. On an invite from a long time friend and trad guy, who is also a member, I went down for two days of fellowship and hunting. The rule is 8 pts or better or does. I sat two mornings and tow afternoons. I saw a total of 16 deer(9 bucks from spike to 6pts), one racoon and 2 bear. That was on stand. We saw a bunch more on the roads. Had a blast and shot a 110lb doe the last afternoon. Looked like a liver hit and it was in the mid 30's so I gave her the night and found her the next morning. 80 yard recovery. rick welch recurve, cx100 with 175 razorcaps, Kanati angle quiver.

Yeah John, No way I would have hit hat deer without one of your quivers on my bow. Must be some mojo in them. Every time I take it off and go hunting I see nothing, but the moment I slap that baby on, I have to beat the deer off with a stick. LOL. You'll like the stealth, sure beats dragging em 4 or 5 miles. WE gonna get you down in a couple of weeks. Bear season is in in that county till jan 1st. Seeing a lot on them that need killin. DB

Don,
Believe it or not, I grew up hunting on Luken's Island.  Way before Open Ground Farms came in there.  Killed my first deer at the age of 8 at the mouth of Eastman Creek.
Our "clubhouse" was the old Post Office building just down the path from the graveyard...it still had the "mail slots" in it.
I've got a picture of a bear and a deer that I helped my dad kill within 15 minutes of one another...I was 3 yrs old.
Boy, those were the good ol' days.  Now it's a place for rich lawyers and such.  Glad you got to go, though.
BTW, are the wild cows still there?

Hey Tom, small world, I shot my first deer at the head of turnigan bay when I was 12. we use to spend a week there every season. I grew up on clubfoot creek. Not a bad place for a youngster to enjoy the outdoors. my 3 boys can hardly believe when I tell them about the ducks that use to come every winter. I'm heading back down today for an afternoon hunt and to see one of the guys that i haven't seen in a few years. Later Don

Great goings on, Don, and proud on ya! That doe was bigger than she looked in the pic - that's a nice one.

Don, it is a small world.  My mom's family is from Oriental via Portsmouth Oiland.  I also remember the millions of oysters up in those creeks, before Open Grounds drained the land and the sediment killed them all.

I'm ready anytime, John. Went and sat in the rain about three or four hours this AM (not something I normally do these days/years - LOL). It wasn't supposed to rain until noon. Didn't see a thing, other than a couple tree rats.

Bernie, keep after em and you'll get one soon. Try to get you and john back for an afternoon soon. I got one stand that Ive seen the same two does on the last 4 times Ive sat in it. I named both of them Bernice.  Went back to Lukens and Sat Friday afternoon from 2:30 till dark. 14 deer sighted in stand. All with in 20yds. two or three button bucks, one cowhorn, one 4pts and one really nice 6 pt, and a slew of does. The big one was haveing a time trying to chase out the smaller bucks and run at the does. I was well intertaind all afternoon. DB

Sounds like whatever they are doing down there is working. I haven't seen that many deer in one sitting since 3 or 4 years ago on Camp Lejeune one evening. (Be real nice to Bernice One and Bernice Two - LOL)

I love it - but I still say I'd be delighted just to see one once again - LOL They have four legs, don't they - and, I think I recall, a kind of wide, white tail???
