best adhesive for hardwood footings?
« on: December 30, 2008, 10:32:00 AM »
Hey everyone,

Im making some footed cedar arrows and I’m not sure what the best epoxy for the job is. I have heard a lot about weldwood but lowes and home depot dont carry it =/

would gorilla glue work? I have used it on hardwood nock inlays and that seems to work.

Tite Bond 2 or 3. The bond will be stronger than the wood.

With the footed arrows do you have a jig to cut them or how are you doing it?
I once saw a jig but now cannot find it. Would like to try that footing hard wood on cedar.

im making a two wing footing. So what i do is use a thumb plane to taper 5 inches of the shaft and then glue that into the hardwood. Its the same process they show in the bowyers bible three. Ill post some pics when they are done if you would like.

I like the titebond 3 a little better than the two.  The strength is supposed to be about equal but I was told the type 3 is more waterproof than the 2 so I go with that.

I do single point splices and never had one fail even on hits that snapped the point or splintered the whole front of the shaft, the splice never failed on the glue line.

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

When I was footing shafts I had alot of failures on four wing foots with titebond so I quit using it.  I used polurathane glues like elmers polyurathane and gorilla glue with good sucess.  Rusty Watson of Rustys Foots used Weldwood Plastic Resin glue.  It is a powdered wood glue that you mix with water.  He made tens of thousands and swore by the stuff. dino

I have probably broke a half dozen footed shafts while stump shooting.  All of them were made with titebond 2 or 3 and have never had one break at the joint.
