String making instructions?
«

I'd like to start making my own strings. I see three rivers has a dvd and I've come across quite a bit on the net, but sometimes it isn't the most clear. Anyone recommend a string making web site, book, or dvd?

Hi JSimon, I've made a couple of strings using the instructions on this website:

Hope this helps.

JSimon,
I had never twisted a string before last week and now I am making very nice flemish strings on my own. If you look back on pg. 32 of O.L.'s 4 strand string thread you will see a pic of my 3rd string that I made. I used the website above in the previous post on geocities.com to build my jig and then watched his video and then went to youtube and found these two videos as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUVXGUN5YZU&feature=related
Between thes two sites I was able to figure it out in one afternoon. It took me a couple of strings to get the length right because I wound the strings around the longest nails and since there are only 3 strands in a bundle per color on a 6 strand string, the string actually came out long. I now use the next nail shorter than the length my bow is to get the length right on the string bundles. My bow is 64" but I use the 62" nail in the center of the jig. I padded my loops to 16 strands which comes out to 5 extra strands on either bundle at the ends for padded loops. I cut my padding strands 14" and 13.5" and 12" and 11.5" and 11". this staggers the lengths so that you get a tapered look on the loop endings. Hope this helps!

You did not specify your bow.
There are double loop, Flemish twist, and braided native style strings made for traditional and self bows. Material can be B-50 Dacron or Fast Flight (if a new enough bow made for it) or other artificial or natural materials as you wish.
It would seem that most here would prefer the Flemish Twist with B-50 Dacron and a Braided Nylon serving. All have purpose and beauty of their own and can be made by almost anyone with a little patience and practice.

Thanks guys. I'm looking to build Flemish twist strings.
Don,
O.L's thread, and particularly your post got me thinking about making my own strings. Your string looked great! My bow seems kind of loud, so I'm hoping to try some skinnier strings to see if that helps. Thanks for the video links, that's perfect. Now all I need to do is get some string material.

JSimon,
Glad it helped!
I got my string materials off E B A Y from a seller named bowhunterssuperstore. They had one of the cheapest prices on the web. I paid a little over $70 with shipping for two spools of Dyneema97. I think the skinny string will definitely quiet your bow down.

Don,
Thanks again. I've ordered quite a bit of stuff from bowhunterssuperstore.com. I assume they are one in the same, but I didn't know they sold stuff on E B A Y. Your right, they have some of the cheapest prices around. I bought an arrow saw from them for $55 that Cabelas puts their name on and sells for $99. They also sell Carbon Express Heritage shafts for $65 a dozen which is the cheapest I've found them.
