Tuned, this is what I ended up with.
« on: March 09, 2007, 03:23:00 PM »
I switched back to carbons after a year or so with aluminum, and since I'm shooting a different bow now I had to start from scratch. The reason I'm posting this is because threads like this really helped me when I left the compound bow. This is what I got:new Super Kodiak,55lb@28,FF string, off the shelf.Shooting Blackhawk Vapors 3000's 28 3/4in with 3 5in feathers,125gr Magnus 2 blade with 75gr steel adapter-total=460gr.NP @ 3/4in above the shelf.I wanted to use 125gr adapter but they make the shaft too weak.Right now it shoots where I look and arrow flight is what I expect from well tuned bow.It took me about 2 weeks of shooting everyday, making small changes and shooting alot until I was convinced of each adjustment.I started with bareshafting, but the majority of the tuning was done by field point/broadhead comparison until BH's and field points flew and grouped identical. For anyone that settles for decent arrow flight just because it's a "recurve",don't.Bullet flight can be achieved,It takes time and patience.Hope I didn't bore anyone, but I figured this might help someone out.Oh,I know arrow wieght is a little light by some standards, but since it's carbon I 'm gonna go with it and see what happens.I may load the shaft for added weight after I hunt withem a while.

Robert,

Not boring. You pinpointed my favorite process. I tried the bare shaft thing, but at this point, all I worry about is field points and broadheads grouping to the same spot at 30-35 yards. If I can do this with arrows flying like a lazer, then I call it good.

I do tune with point weight versus cutting the shaft.

It's a great feeling, and a tremendous boost to your confidence when you know you've tuned right.

Like Ray, I'm not a bare shafting fan.  I like to shoot LARGE broadheads, point blank, at a foam target that will hold arrow orientation at impact.  When the big broadheads are coming off the bow perfect, longer range flight is lazer straight and they group with field points, I'm done.

Good job, carbon tuning can be tough.

I actually did cut my shafts according to bareshaft results to get close and then swiched to BH/FP tuning. Now if I can just get my release down pat I'll be set.I think the release is the hardest part to master as it is the final link and so critical of mistakes.
