Who puts forward cresting on Timbers like this?
«

G'day to all here,
Just wanting to know who puts what I would call a forward crest on there timber arrows like the below pic?
I think it looks ok myself, I just wondering if it's ment to be put on at a set distance up the shaft so one know how much arrow they got into a critter?
Any pics or ideas would be helpfull.

Hi Al! When I made and shot wood arrows, I laid a crest on the feather/tail end of the shaft that referenced the brace height....usually the back side of the sight window. Other than that , it was just what I thought looked nice. BUT I NEVER had any come out looking as nice as the ones your doing! Beautiful work!! Hey, when you comin' over here to chase some critters? G'day again lads,
I'm sorry to say but the above mentioned arrows I did not make. I've just saved the pic is all to my laptop. But I can put together arrows like that though, it's just the forward crest that had me is all.
Mike, soon mate, hopefully in Sep 09. I just have to confirm the dates with my employer and I'm set.

One guy I make arrows for has me put a ring at 10 inches behind the point for judging depth of penetration.

I've occasionally seen arrows crested like that for the past 50 years or so. Doesn't seem to be any pattern or set distance from the forward crest to the tip of the shaft.

I have done some in the past. I was told by an old timer it was called a lung ring. Suppose to be able to see what type of blood ie, lung, liver ,ect...Those are really nice arrows Al.

Al:
I don't remember Arrow Art ever doing footed arrows, could be wrong, but I've done many shows with them and never saw footed arrows in there booth.

I know Paul Jalon of Elite Arrows does on some of his arrows.

I do something like that on mine so I can tell which arrow it is without looking behind me. That is when I use my Stalker type quiver, with the opening in the side.

I often place a crest ring at 10" from the point to judge penetration if I only find the fletched half of my arrow after the shot. Best penetration mark is blood stained fletching.
Sometimes I put a draw length crest on extra long arrows.
