Arrow Help
« on: January 16, 2009, 02:06:00 AM »
I;m looking for an arrow for my longbow. I'm shooting a 49#@28", 58" Super Shrew longbow.

I am now shooting a Beeman MFX Classic 500@29" with a 125 grain tip. These arrow work great! But only weigh in around 435grains or so(I believe, haven't weighed one in a while)

I have taken a few large pigs, including passing through a 600# ferral at 17yds. I also took a small doe last year at 20yds or so and passed through. I like the performance but want to see what more weight will do.

I want to play around and see how I like an arrow in the 500-550 grain range. Any ideas? I'd like to stay with a slim arrow if possible. Should i go with a heavier spine and heavy head or just move up to an Axis full metal jacket in the 500 spine?

The best thing to do is get yourself some heavier points or brass inserts and give them a try.

Paul's got you covered. More weight up front is just what the Dr. ordered. If Paul does not stock them, Bob Morrison sells 250gr and 300gr field points. Get some and try them out. You will be amazed at how your arrows fly and they will hit with some authority. For broadheads you can use a 160gr STOS with a 125gr steel adaptor for 285gr total or get some 300xtremes (300gr).

I have a 48lb@27" 56" SuperShrew and have a half dozen MFX 500's cut to 29.5 inch and also have been shooting 125gr heads. When I go to 175gr heads the spine is to weak and my arrows kick. I have been thinking about cutting them back alittle to stiffen them up for more foward weight. I also was looking for alittle more weight with my arrow setup have been shoot AD lite with 150 to 175gr heads as of lately they fly great also.

If i want to keep the length at 29", what spine would you reccomend with what weight head? Lets say a 400 or 350....how much weight do i need up front. At least for a starting point for tuning

Don't change your arrows.  Give the heavier points a try first.  If you want to go to a 400 you are going to need alot of wt at least 250.

I fletched up a few 29" MFX 400's with a 100 grain insert and 125 grain head. Man these things fly great and hit hard! I had 3 fletched a few that werent yet, so i figured i would see how the bare shaft flew. It was right with the fletches arrows out to 15yds.......I didn't have time to move back any farther but the fletched shafts were dropping right into the kill zone on my target at 30yds everytime and i didn't see any fishtailing or porposing at all.
I want to weigh the new arrows soon and see what they are the old ones were 430 grains

With any luck I'll get to "test" them for real on Saturday on a nice fat CT whitetail!
