Endless Loop Question: Pad the loops or Dbl. Serve
« on: January 22, 2009, 02:20:00 PM »
I am trying to learn to make  endless loop strings for some older target bows I have. I'm wanting to have generously padded loops so as not to stress out the limb tips/nocks. I had one disaster with a flemish 10 strand padded loop B500 string (40#@28). The top loop cut right through the nock and split the limb down about 5"
I figured endless loop strings with their served loops might be a bit kinder on these older bows. To get a nice fat loop on a 12 strand B500 string, I have been trying to double serve with BCY 3D, but it is hard to get a nice taper where the loop comes together (It's the second loop that's killing me...). I'm sure it can be figured out with practice, but I began to wonder if it wouldn't be easier and just as effective to just pad the loops with, say, 4 strands of B500 and then single serve. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
Dave

What I did on padding the loop end on an endless D97 12 strand,I added 4 extra strands of D97 before I served up the loop ends.I wanted to use the same material as the string for an endless. But I guess you could double serve it too.I not sure which would be better, that was my only padded loop endless,I haven't done it on dacron yet.I bought a endless padded loop 8125 for a DAS I had a year ago, then I started to make my own.I'm not sure how that custom string maker did that one.The D97 endless I made is still holding up.This is how I did the D97,I haven't made that many endless loop strings, wish I could have been more help.I used the 3D serving on D97 and use nylon serving for my endless dacron.

What works for me is first serve with 3d then serve overthat with halo .030 makes a very nice endless string

When I'm making mine, while the posts are perpendicular to the string for serving, I wind 4 or more strands around the posts, serve the loop, cut the padding string and continue serving. I serve right on down the loose ends( which are uneven in length) and the result is a tapered padded loop.

Thanks for the replies. I tried padding the loops as you both suggested and it seems to work well. The only thing I don't like with this method is that when you serve the loop shut, there is a much thicker bundle of string there so the wrap is pretty fat until it tapers out. Maybe I'm not building iy right. The double served loops came together in a much more streamlined way. More practice I guess. Thanks again.

If you read the "skinny string" post, all 40 + pages, it is mentioned that the taper you are refering to also helps quiet the harmonics of the string. If you cut the padding so there are 2-4 different lenghts it tapers down quite smoothly.
