For those that crest arrows
« on: January 22, 2009, 04:58:00 PM »
a quick question.

What is the order of finish

EX.

is it stain, cap dip, crest, seal

or stain, seal, dip and crest.

I am going to be using minwax stain, model paint for cresting, and rub on Poly for seal.  Dont really know what to do for cresting?????

Thanks.

I stain, dip, crest and then seal. That way the cresting doesn't wear.

Me too - I crest just before my last (3rd) dip in finish.

Do mine the same as snag...PR...seems to me cresting afterwards would smear the cresting when you shot

I have done this a couple of times:

1) Seal the wood (Oil based stain) Let dry and wipe with 600 grit.
2) Use Creme Coat or Delta Craft paint to do your cap and cresting.
3) Brush on or Dip in Watco Clear Lacquer, Water based paint will not run or smear when dipped in Lac.

Stain, then seal.  Then dip, creast and then seal 2 more times!

Wood - stain, seal with one coat, dip and crest, then seal with 3 more coats.

Carbon/Aluminum - dip, crest, spray with Fleshman's spar urethane

I only dip and crest carbon and Aluminum for friends now though.

Onestringer wraps are the way to go for everything but wood IMO.

I do the same as Badger except I use Watco Spray Clear Lacquer.  A quick coat of that right over the creasting keeps it from smearing. dino

I have always sanded the shafts, after straightening.  Stain my shafts.  Then I will seal them with 3 coats, using dip system.  I then crown and crest them.  I will then dip seal them three more times.  If I am using them for hunting will 000 steel wool between each dip after dry.  I find that the first 3 seal the shafts and gives me a nice smooth finish to crown and crest.  The the last three protect the crown/crest.
