Out of state Elk Applications

Looking to "flock shoot" the upcoming elk season with multiple applications to various states. I'm looking at putting in for elk in Colorado (points or no point hunts)as a non-resident and New mexico as well (Chama zone 4)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most CO units don't require points -- just show up and buy your tags over the counter. NM is tough and getting tougher to draw. Go on the various state wildlife dept. websites and hunt around for big game drawing info. Most go out in late winter or early spring (March-ish) and deadline by June 1 or before, so there's little time for messing around. YOu get almost all your money back, so it's a short-term investment with no interest. Unless you win! Hunting seasons come so infrequently that we have to try and find fun in every aspect of the hunt!dave

you'd probably have a better chance at hitting the powerball in kentucky getting a non-resident tag, but they do issue out a few (no point system). It cost 15 bucks for a chance, which i'm pretty sure is changing to ten bucks this year.

You didn't mention Wyoming and the deadline is this saturday, but you'll not have great odds if you don't have any preference points; still possible in the random draw however. Good news is that the results are posted relatively quickly and even better news is that the elk hunting is very good.
Utah's deadline for limited elk tags is mid February, but somewhat like Colorado you can hunt lots of cow/spike and any bull units with general tags that are available first come/ first served; unlike Colorado there is a limit to the number of available tags.
Montana's deadline is March 15 and no OTC tags are available to NRs.

Thanks guys,
I live in Idaho so Wyoming will see me applying for a point. I went to college in Colorado and really like that place so I'll be looking there (Conejos, Fairplay, Salida) too. Yes, even around Dave2old:) I've done my research on Utah and have three points thus far. It doesn't look like I'll be putting in for Montana but Oregon might work since I've got family in the Wallowa Mountains. It's true, sometimes the journey is more fun than the destination.

I had sticker shock when I received Montana's application, $1500.00 for a outfitter sponsered elk/deer tag. I have one bonus point from last year (was not drawn)$643.00 for the same tag in a drawing format this year. The dilema I have though is the airline fare, It has doubled since going in 2007. It is a shame when states put staggering prices for non-residents, I will probaly not be able to hunt with my dear and good friend in Montana anymore.

Colorado license application is usually due the first week in April. The proclamations will be out the third week in February. Idabow, having grown up in New Mexico and spent many years hunting elk there, I would recommend that you try to apply for some other unit than Chama (unit 4). The majority of that country is private and there are plenty of areas throughout the state that would offer a first class quality experience. Food for thought, T
