This morning I kissed my wife goodbye and said I was going to the woods to shoot some stumps and chase some squirrels. Our temps here have'nt broken 20 degrees in over a week and this morning was no different with the thermometer in the Van showing the outside temp at 8 degrees, but the sun was shining and I was desperate for some Cabin Fever relief.
I layered myself in wool, snatched up my HH Tembo and a dozen flu-flus and set out for the hour drive to some state land that I have'nt seen in over a year.
I got to the parking area around 1030, strung my bow and after shooing a flock of Turkeys off the trail proceded into the woods.
The snow was deeper than I had anticipated and I wished I'd packed my snowshoes, but I figured what the heck I'll give it a go.
The depth of the snow really forced me to slow down and take my time but I found a very wide and heavily used deer trail that was well packed and made traveling easier.
The trail meandered through the hardwoods and pines and down into a swampy area that floods after heavy rains but was now frozen solid. I found lots of rotted pine stumps on the edge of the swamp and started flinging arrows.
I studied each stump before shooting, picking a spot.
But one particular stump about 15 yrds away and hidden by a little brush caught my eye and as I stared at it I thought; "Dang, that looks like a rabbit" A moment later I picked out an ear and then an eyeball. I brought the arrow to anchor and focused on that eyeball and let the arrow slip from fingers...
The noise from that flu-flu fletching must sound just like the wind rushing thru a Hawks wings as he comes in for the kill because that rabbit wasted no time diving into his hole that was 6 inches away and a split second later my arrow struck the snow right were he was sitting. Oh well... Good times for sure.
