Leather finish for back quiver...
«
on:
January 28, 2009, 11:32:00 AM »
I made a back quiver for my son's upcoming birthday. It is made out of vegetable tan leather that I stained brown! I picked up Neat Lac to finish it but have no experience with it. Has anyone used Neat Lac before or is there a better way of finish/sealing the quiver??? Also will it darken the leather at all?
Thanks

I would use Pecards leather dressing on it. Military and musuem curators use it on old leather goods. Apply sparingly. Any dressing will darken leather.
Most leather doesn't require sealing as it has to breath to survive. I'd stay away from any Neatsfoot oil product myself. It will eventually rot the leather.
I have holsters from WW1 and WW2 that are in great shape and nothing much has been applied to them.

Montana Pitch Blend is an excellent leather dressing and is made from bees wax, mink oil and pine pitch. I use it on all of my leather.
Any leather dressing will darken the leather over time.
Some leather dressings have silicon in them and it will clog the pores and cause the leather to rot. Pat

So what your saying is all I need to do is dye the leather then apply a dressing, such as Montana Pitch or Pecards and I'm good to go??
