Help weighting a gold tip...please
« on: February 01, 2009, 11:39:00 PM »
Hey guys, I'm going to try and tune and weight a 3355 goldtip tomorrow and would like to get some suggestion from you.
I am shooting a BW recurve 48lbs@26".
I have some goldtip weights that I had from several years ago. I don't remember what they weigh...there is some little screws that are about 1" long. Some brass weight that screw on them and some silver ones the same size. Anybody know what they weigh?
I am going to be shooting a 125gr tip and would like to get my arrow length down to about 27" if possible, and the wieght of the arrow at about 500grns.
Can anyone that has experience with this give me any pointer as to how much weight I may need to add to the point. Also, do I need to add any weight to the knock in order to get the FOC correct?
Thanks!

A 27" 3555 GT is going to be really stiff. I think that you will need to add the 100 grain brass inserts for starters and don't be too hasty to cut the arrows. You may need to leave them a little longer to get good arrow flight. pup

I don't think they make enough weights to soften them up enough at 27".

Well I don't shoot 3555 But I like brass insert, 100 gr steel adapters and a heavy head Like 145 or 190, that makes my 7595 fly great & I leave them a little long as well. I agree with others try them long and cut as needed. With enough weight up front they will work.

Have fun tuning, It's almost my favorite part of getting ready for the hunt...

I shoot a BW plx 52@28 and draw 27. I shoot GT's 35/55 cut to 28 with a 50grn insert a 145 point.

Micah, I have 3555's and tried those weights in the beginning. Here is a link to 3 rivers archery explaining the size of the weights.

    http://www.3riversarchery.com/product.asp?i=SPW05

All my bows are from 50-56lbs @ 28" and the 56 lber is a Widow SAIII. My 3555's are cut to 28" and my draw length is 26". I ended up getting the heavy 100 grain brass inserts, simply because I didn't like the idea of having something screwed together that could come loose and not to mention may have wobble if not perfectly lined up when screwed together. These carbon arrows are light weight as well and the heavy 100 grain inserts adds the needed weight.

As someone said above I wouldn't just whack your arrows down to your desired 27" length. Take one of them and cut it down a little at a time.

My arrow set up shoots perfectly straight out of all three of my bow's with this set up.  Here is the link to the brass inserts. If you have never fooled with these carbons, you will need to epoxy the inserts in so they don't pull out.

Good luck T.J.

OK, here's what happend 2day with the 3555!
I went to get just a regular 3555hunter goldtip. They were out but had the Traditional Wood looking GT's so I got one of them.
I started out cutting about an inch off the back. Why? Because after I got home and was about to put a nock in it I saw a crack in the shaft down the shaft about a half inch. O'well, I've seen that when I shot them out of my compound several years ago.
I put on the weight adapter (30grn) on the nock along with the screw(10grn.) and a 20grn. screw on wieght. I then put on the 125grn field point along with the insert, a screw, and 2-20grn. weights.
I started out shooting a full length shaft (minus the 1" I had to cut off) and it was really weak. I began cutting off a little at a time until I started getting really good bare shaft flight. I ended up with a shaft that is 28" (including the nock adapter).
So, the best of calculation shows that I have 3-20grn weights, 2-10grn screws, 1-30grn. adapter, a 125grn. point, 27.5" shaft. I calculate that at 471.5 plus the weight of the feathers, insert, and nock. That should be right at 10grns. per pound.
So, did I do ok?  :D
Thanks for everyones help, and I probably will use the brass insert that T.J. suggested. Those look a little simpler.

I'm glad you posted your results. I just posted a few days ago asking about 3555 GTs for my HH longbow which is the same draw weight and draw length as your recurve. Since mine isn't center shot, though, I'll likely have to do some more tweaking if I go that route.  I'm gonna pick up some of the new GT traditional .600s when they come out, but I'm still interested in playing with some 3555s also. Thanks for the info.

Btw, the wood-grained Traditionals in 3555 are 8.6 (IIRC) gpi, whereas the black shafts are lighter. Did you figure this into your numbers?

Yep, I had to look at the GT website. I though they would be just a little heavier but didn't know how much. That actually helps us a little bit. To bad they don't make a heavier one with just as light of a spine.
I'm going to be getting a longbow myself in few weeks when the bowyer gets caught up. I guess I'll be back at the drawing board for it. May have to look into the GT .600's. I haven't heard of those yet. Are they coming out soon?

They're supposed to be out anytime now, but I haven't seen a specific date.
